So i cant get my car running after i put the head back on. Turns on but runs really irratically. If you feather the gas the rpm goes way up. there is alot of compression surge noise through the intake. when it did run semi-good i had the CAS turned beyond where it should by taking out the bolts and the exhaust mani got red hot in 1 minute.

either my timing is off or my cams that are showing alot of wear, probably do to oil starvation, are bad.

Question 1. Do redtop camshafts wirk on an s14/s15 head with vvt. of course i would only use the shaft and not the gear?

Question 2. below are pix of how i set up my timing can anyone tell for sure if it is wrong or right?

I'm not sure with the s15 sr, but I'm pretty sure it's probably the same as the other sr's.

Cylinder 1 TDC is NOT the notch on the crank pully that you have pictured. TDC #1 is the second notch in from the left. So one over to the right of where you have it positioned in the picture.

Your cam positions seem to be pretty accurate though.

your cams are out.

you need to have 5.5 teeth on the cam gears on the intake side and 9 on the exhaust side, your intake cam looks a little too far toward to the exhaust

1. No, redtop cams shouldn't work unless you disable vvt

2. Looks damn close if it isn't perfect.

With the engine at TDC (one back from where that picture is) you should count 5.5 teeth clock wise from level with head to the timing dot on the intake and 9 teeth counter-clock wise on the exhaust. It does look close but it's hard to tell without sticking your head in there to see exactly where level is.

It sounds like your trying to set the timing without a timing light, which isn't a good idea. Get the basics done first (timing, plugs, ect) and work out from there.
