I have a 2009 Nissan Frontier. The check engine light went on in the dash. Took the truck to auto zone where they did troubleshooting. what they found to be probable cause was:
661-faulty fuel cap
662-purge sytem leak
663-faulty canister vent control valve
664-faulty purge control valve
so, I played with the gas cap and appeared that light went off. I took the vehicle for an inspection, no problem. I no sooner pick up the truck and thecheck engine light is on again. Shortly after I go to fuel up and the truck an not take more than $6.68 with out spilling back out. Our gas is $3.89 a gallon, that is not even two gallons. You can fill the tank but very, very slow. Took the truck to the dealer where they said it will be $140.00 just to put it on thier machine so they can diagnose and whatever the repair fee is. The vehicle of course, is just over the warrantee it has 39,000 miles on it. The truck is very well maintained we are in New York and have had a brutal winter. Feedback please!!

The canister purge valve has been a problem for all Nissans since they moved the canister out from under the hood to under the rear of the car. The purge valve gets road salt on it then dies. Most of the time the bolts freeze in the canister so most likely the whole assembly needs to be replaced. As for the truck spitting fuel out at you there was a time when Nissan was replacing the flapper valve down at the bottom of the filler neck. It required removing the sending unit, reaching in the tank to pull off the old flapper valve then putting a new, redesigned, version back in. You might want to check for any open campaigns your truck might have that have not been addressed yet. The dealer can tell you by your VIN whether or not it has outstanding work needing to be done to it. Where in NY are you?

Is this a job only a mechanic can do. I was trying to see if there were any recalls. From the small bit of research I have done it looks like it is going to be a pretty penny.

Yes, recalls. The canister and valve will be a big coin. As for the flapper I am not sure. The trucks were the worst ones to work on because you had to drop the tank to gain access to the sending unit which needed to come out. You might have your work cut out for you. How rusty is the truck underneath?

Hmmm that changes a lot. I am not too familiar with the newer 05+ Frontier systems.

if you pull the filler head back out of the fuel tube, does it fill correctly? My Versa has a condition that if I put the filler head in the tube 100% it doesn't like to fill. If I pull it out ~10% it will fill without an issue and still click off properly.

When the light comes on, does it happen at a certain point in the tank? I had a condition where the light would only come on between 75% full and 25% full. Outside of that, no MIL on the gauges.
