The screw is rusted badly and broke when we tried to replace the belt. It started storming right after that and I was unable to look into it further but I need to have the car operational tomorrow and thought I would gather any information I can in the meantime.

Do I need to replace the whole assembly or just the screw, where can I get those parts?

I would greatly appreciate any insight into this, perhaps I'm not the only one that's had this problem....

Thanks

I'm not sure which pulley bolt this one is but it's threaded backwards and has a special head to capture it to the bracket. No Ace Hardware for this part. Definately a stealership or salvage yard part.

Goody are both of them threaded backwards? I konw the one that holds the pulley onto that thing is backwards...

Either way, I agree.. I must be losing my touch, I should have thought of that...

To the OP, you are kinda screwed until you can get to a junkyard or infiniti dealer.. No autoparts stores are going to be able to get this much less have it in stock..

The nuts for all three pulleys are the standard right hand thread. It's the long adjustment bolt that's threaded backwards. Either way, it's the odd shoulder on the adjustment bolt that makes this one a stealership only part.

true, dat.

the reverse pitch on the alt and a/c belts is so that you still turn the tension adjuster CW to add tension (in this case pushing the pulley away).

the PS/WP belt is also CW to add tension, but it is not reverse pitch (draws pulley closer).

Thanks for the info everyone, (the pic was VERY helpful) looks like it may be down for the count until I can get the part from the "stealership". as far as removing the rest of the fragment of the bolt that is left I think I'm going to try to remove it with vice grips or something.

I just got the car, it's kinda rough and rusty but it runs. Doesn't seem to have the famous injector issues. It does have an odd sound when being driven that's coming from the rear of the car. Sounds like a biplane is following me at any speed above 30mph, no vibration or anything just the annoying noise. I'm assuming it's the rearend since the TCS and SLIP lights are both on on the dash and you can't engage the TCS?

Again thanks so much for the helpful info, I'm not a mechanic and don't pretend to be; I'm just a tinkerer that can usually put something back together that I have taken apart.

as a kludge, you might 'borrow' the adjuster bolt from the a/c pulley and use it on the alt (you can drive with no a/c, but won't get very far with no alt.

until you can fix it properly of course.

Got the bolt and bracket at a salvage yard today for 2 dollars. Came home and pulled the one off my Q only to figure out in that process that the tensioner pulley had locked up, probably causing the failure of the belt to begin with. So, the search tomorrow will be for a new tensioner pulley as the only Q at the salvage yard already had the pulley removed. Hopefully one of the Infiniti dealers here in town will have it, so I can avoid overnight shipping charges.

Wow...$2. I bought the same with the pulley at the stealership for $112.
