Sometimes when I first crank my truck, it will sputter and exspell black smoke. That tells me it is flooding. I keep this truck in good mechanical condition i.e. tune-ups, oil changes and all filters changed, on a regular basis. I have owned the truck for about 1 year and it has recently started this (last month or so).

Also, sometimes when I am driving it (@ normal operating temperature), taking off from a dead stand still, shifting gears, it will sputter and black smoke, for a couple seconds, between all gears, while trying to accellerate.

What is the most common cause of this problem? What do I need to replace?

Thank you, in advance, for any information, Charles.

Sounds like perhaps a leaky injector but more info is needed. Have you checked the basics like air filter and spark plugs, cap, rotor, timing, ect.?

Yes sir, all that you mentioned is good. Please keep in mind that, it doesn't do this everytime I crank it up, nor every time I take off from a dead stand still. Maybe 50/50. Oh, it is the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder.
