Okay so i got an 08 Nissan Altima coupe 2.5 CVT this problem happen to me about 6 months ago when going up the grapevine and happened again today..
6 months(about 60k miles on car) ago i was driving up the grape vine and i hit a pot hole hard going about 75mph, a couple seconds later i try to accelerate and it does not want to speed up, i floor the gas pedal and same thing the car does not accelerate, than i change gears on the car and car will not shift at all and stays on same gear, i pull over turn off the car than turn it back on and rev the engine still same thing car revs up super slow with gas pedal all the way down, i than turn off the car again leave it off for 10 minutes turn it back on and car works perfectly, i went to the Nissan dealership the next day and explained what happened and they never have heard about the problem and said they couldn't do anything about it because the problem wasn't occurring at the time.

Now i have about 80,000 miles on the car went up the grapevine did not hit any pot holes, i was going about 80mph when the same thing happens again.. i floor the gas pedal and rpm stays in the low 2k-3k and does not pick up speed at all.. i pulled over turn off for 1 min turn back on,same thing... i turn off for about 10 minutes turn it back on and it works... i keep driving about 15 minutes later the problem happens again, this time i get my phone and i record it..i tried shifting down on 4th gear at 40mph and nothing, i tried shifting up and went to 5 than 6..shift back down and got stuck on 4th again.. i pressed on the gas and it accelerated like it should and did not get stuck on accelerating

has this problem happened to anyone else or does anybody have an idea of what it could be? any advice will be useful , have an appointment on Monday to take it in to the dealership

this happens to me alot too on long drives, I can't find the thread but its a safetly feature to help protect the cvt, & it wont let your rpms go past 3k, it sucks but It happens to me too...

you better go to the dealer if you're car is still under warranty!

yeah im still gonna go get it checked out and they'll probably find nothing wrong with it and try to charge me, but at least this time i got proof that there is something funky going on with the car

when i tried downshifting, i was going 40mph and did not want to go lower than 4th...on my way back down the grape vine when it was working i went 40mph and tried down shifting and it went from 3.. 2..1 and worked fine.. im still gonna check it hoping they find something even though theres no check engine light on and its still under warranty

The only time I've had something like that happen is if I brake really hard. If you brake really hard and then try to hit the gas, the car goes into some sort of limp mode for a minute... But I've never heard of this happening while just formal driving. I've hit bad pot holes, I hit a curb really bad, I've taken many road trips and I've never had this happen before

have you tried disconnecting the battery for 15 mins? It could be a computer related problem..

Really? are you saying that because you work professionally on cvt transmissions & know? or because you assume its not normal? the op doesn't need misguided info...

heres my incident i wasnt using cruise control but still...

edit: parked the car for about an hr & everythings back to normal? maybe the cvt was overheating? its 97 outside

The CVT has an engine-braking mode. When you're in auto and coasting down-hill, it will increase the RPMs to help slow the car down and reduce the wear on brake pads. It's helpful when driving in SF.

That's not what it is happening with your car, because you're in manual mode on a relatively flat highway. I think the CVT is trying to protect itself because it is overheating. Higher RPMs equals more heat. It makes sense that after letting the car rest for 10 minutes, it started working normally. But then 15 minutes later it got too hot and you got the same behavior.

One way to test it, is the next time this happens, slow down to about 10 to 15 mph and see if it will let you downshift. At that speed, being in 3rd gear should put you in relatively low RPMs.

I don't have to be working professionally on CVT or anything to tell that what he's facing is not normal. I've had my car with CVT transmission for a couple of years now, and what he's facing is like nothing I've ever encountered. Either way, it is safest to go to the dealer, especially that he has a video of it! ;)

Ok so i went to nissan yesterday and they told me before they checked it out that it sounds to them that it went into fail-safe mode and what caused it was that I had a lil too much transmission fluid in the car.
I had changed my transmission fluid about 2000 miles ago and let the car get cold before I changed it, but according to them you can only drain and refill at 160 degrees??
Oh well i got charged about 50 bucks for there service and well find out hopefully this week if i go up the grape vine and it messes up again

The same thing happened to me on a road trip to CO from Dallas I tried to pass a 18 wheeler and the RPM would stay stuck at 3000 and the car would not accelerate with the pedal to the floor. After the car rested a day I got back on the highway and had no issues then on the way back to TX going through mountains it did it again I was at 75mph and it just dropped very scary I didnt chance it coming back to TX and I towed it took it to nissan and they told me the transmission cooler was out and that it would go into saftey mode when the transmission got too hot. Dealer wanted to charge me $200 for the part and $300 for labor. I ended up going to a transmission guy that a friend recommended he did it all for $230 although he couldnt confirm with me this was the issue he told me transmissions on the altima are known for going out nissan extended the warranty to 120k. Coincidently I just hit 100k miles on my 2010 coupe. Since replacing the cooler I havent noticed any more issues other then the battery going out which im sure is un related but super annoying that the dealer didnt warn me it was bad. I havent been on long trips again to really test it but be cautious the transmission warranty expires at 120k.

I had the same issue happen to me while driving from southern California to Vegas over labor day weekend 2015. Took my car to Nissan and they said I needed a new transmission and wanted to charge me 3900.00. The codes that I had that were causing this issue were P0840 and P0845. If I were you, I would have Nissan replace my transmission immediately because they extended the warranty on them from 60k to 120k. I am at 135k so I had to come out the pocket for mine but I took it to a local transmission shop where they did it for 2000.00. I just got my car back yesterday and it seems decent. Below is the link to the Service Bulletin that should cover you if you are under 120k on your car. I've learned that this is a very common issue with the continuously variable transmission but at least you can get yours done for free if you haven't already.

Driving on the interstate at 75 mph. Started around a truck and the car started slowing down. I tried to accelerate by pushing the accelerator pedal. This did nothing, I pulled to the right and it slowed to 40 mph after reaching the top of the hill put it in natural and coasted to the bottom put it back in gear and it was normal again. When the transmission fluid temperature gets hot it goes into a safe mode. I installed a Tran’s cooler it helped but did not cure the problem. I drove it for a month as long as I keep in on cruise control it worked just fine but if I accelerated to go around slower traffic it would go into safe mode. Before I installed the cooler the hotter is was outside the more likely and sooner it would go into the safe mode so I would keep in on cruise control at 65 mph and it would not go into safe mode, after the cooler I could set cruise control at 80 mph in 100 degrees outside it would be ok as long as I didn’t accelerate.
At 59000 miles the dealer replaced the valve body because the car was jerking at lower speeds. I have had the car at the dealer with no luck they always told me there were no codes and could not find anything wrong. This only happens after driving about 40 miles and half way up the hill going home. I had a 100000 mile warranty and as soon as it ran out the ck eng. light came on with a code PO744D.
The sad part is I bought a 2012 Sentra the same day and it is doing the same thing.
I could swear Nissan has the computer set not to show any codes until the warranty is up.
