On my 03 maxima the cause was a defective crankshaft position sensor. There was a recall for this, but my Vin # wasn't covered. If your car's computer is through a code, you can hook up one of those portable readers to the computer located around the fuse box area and read it. My first guess is the CPS, my second is the mass air flow sensor.

I've seen things very similar to this happen due to the alternator going bad... but haven't heard of the steering wheel locking up. That's pretty dangerous if the car is in motion and it's doing that. Take it in somewhere ASAP.

I had a cavalier that would randomly stall because of bad spark plugs/wires as well. Best to have it checked out.

took car 2 local dealer and they said it's the crank shaft position sensor. They want $375 to fix it! Is this not covered under a recall? Dealer claimed only the reprogramming of the sensor AFTER they replace the sensor is covered.....sounds like bs, is it?

i say ignition lock cylinder, and heres why, if your steering wheel is locking then your car thinks the key has been pulled, it would also explain why the car shuts off.
