Hello all, here is my introduction:

About me. I am ASE certified Master Technician with L1, and certified Expert Technician for the brand I work for now. 35 plus years working in every aspect of the car business. Been there, done most of it.

As to why I am here. I have been lurking and reading for some time now. Ever since my son got it in his head he wanted a Nissan. A 240SX of course. Why? To do exactly what I tried to prevent in every car I have built. Go sideways dad.

This is a transition for my son from race MX bikes and quads to building something for the road. My plan (not his) is to start slowly and build from there. So we ended up with a S14 that is almost un-molested and in a bunch of boxes. Car is pretty much rust free, full interior that sports no cracked dash and not hacked up. Inventory looks like original KA motor, 2 disassembled spare motors, 2 transmissions, turbo install kit, 4 sets of pipes and miscellaneous exhaust, and a truckload of other stuff. Some of this is what I have collected, some comes with car.

So, as I have read a lot of BS, bad advice and really stupid things on the internet I figured this forum would be a good place to start in the advice area. Our intent is to do this car as a non turbo KA to start, and then low boost turbo once we know car is right. The one motor “has” fresh rods and pistons, once it is up here that gets torn down so I can see hands on whats there. Then its asking here for advice!!!

Thanks in advance !!!

Welcome to the forums Harry! Great to have you aboard. Please suggest to your son that he joins the forum as well. We have a long history of father/son members and joint projects.

We are a very family oriented group!

I love the S14 as a project. You're lucky to find one in a good shape without rust. They are becoming more and more rare by the day and weather and bad drifters and ricers eat them up.

I completely agree with your plan to start with the basic KA motor. It has enough torque to power the car and allow a person to learn how to drift if that's what they wish to do. Starting with a baseline is a great way to learn. Then with each modification and power add you really get to appreciate the impact of what you've done. You'll have so much greater appreciation for the end product if you remember what it was like at the start.

Anyhow.. again, welcome to the forum.. great to have you aboard. PLEASE do keep us in the loop on your project. In fact.. start a build thread and keep pictures and updates as you guys have a chance to work on the car together.

Let us know if you have any questions and we'll try to help as we can.

Welcome aboard, Harry! You won't find a more comprehensive resource for the S-chassis cars on the web - We've been here since 2000, and before that, we were a mailing list for 240sx owners dating back to 1996. TONS of expertise (and experts) here.

Not a whole lot of time to post as I'm up late, but here's an article on a car I built - same deal: Mild NA KA, then light boost, and it progressed into a 400+ hp, frame-scraping, overbuilt monster. :)

BTW, most things that apply to the S13 (1989-1994) also apply to the S14 (1995-1998).

Hope the article is helpful, and from one old Dad to another, props to you for being willing to indulge (and guide) the project.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Just worked out transportation and it looks like car will be here next weekend. Not quite as nice as the “VERT” but a good starting platform for a teenager. I will start a thread with pictures as soon as its up here and inventoried.

Soon the “reading” will be replaced by “wrenching”. Goodbye bank account……..

Definitely good to have your history and expertise on board. Welcome to NICO!

...you're not going to make your son pay for it? I'd be willing to bet he'll be a bit more hesitant to mash the pedal and go sideways toward a wall if he's the one that has to pay to fix it....

Deal is done, son now owns a S14. 12 hours of work driving the car hauler, son drove my car with other trailer hooked up. Only 3 hours each way but nerve wracking on the way back. Overloaded my little trailer, but all is home safe. Of course we had to start on the engine, 1/2 hour of inspection and teardown let me know we have a lot of work to do.

Welcome to NICO!
Looking forwards to the build thread with your son, too.
Looks like you got a really clean chassis and a plethora of extra parts to have in inventory. Nice score!
