Welp, I moved to Tennessee from Maryland. I was at a community college in MD trying to do mechanical engineering and it just wasn't working out. I was trying to motivate myself but distraction, depression, stress, and all kinds of things were just there, asking, "umad bro?" So I figured I needed to either call it quits on engineering or just go balls deep. I didn't want to just drop my dream like that, but it was getting to the point where I was just wasting money.

So, I made an ultimatum. My uncle and aunt live near Memphis (barlett) and they brought up the idea of letting me live with them so I could go to University of Memphis. My uncle was actually enthusiastic of helping me get through the school, any extra fees, books, gas, whatever. He really wants to get me out of the hole I've been digging for the last 3 years. So, I applied to University of Memphis and made a decision, if I get in, then I know what career to pursue.

So I got in, feels awesome to be at a real university. And now I reside in Tennessee. I'm really blessed to have such an awesome family and such supportive friends. When I was thinking about this, my girlfriend (of about 3 years now) didn't even hesitate to support me. She was pretty much like "GO, I'll be here when you get back"

My car is still at my parents house in MD because the engine build is not done. I did, however, bring the block and all the interals and stuff up here so I can build it in my spare time and take it back to MD over the break. I've seen a few 240s in the area, maybe like 4 the whole time I've been here (a week now). I've seen more z32s than 240s though, and a shop on the way to school has 2 very nice 70s celicas sitting outside. I haven't seen as many "worked on" cars here compared to maryland, and not one single exhaust note from an import car. I'm wondering if they have some sort of exhaust sound law like VA has. I might have to swap my HKS exhaust out for a BRM when I bring my car up here :chuckle: Bartlett is outside of Memphis city limits, so apparently my car won't need to go through inspection, which is pretty awesome.

Anyone up here? I don't know what to do in my spare time. I left my mountain bike at home, but I might grab one up here. Theres a place people call "Stanky Creek" that is apparently an AWESOME place to mountain bike, so I'd love to get into that. Other than that, studying, and stuffing my face with JJ's sandwhiches, I'm not doing much :rotfl

Thanks guys! I have access to a lot of cool stuff on campus. Theres a machine shop and some computers with CAD software on them that I'm actually using in a class. I need to figure out the guidelines for the machine shop ASAP.

My Aunt and Uncle are vegetarian :squint: As a carnivore, I find this unacceptable. I'm currently searching for a good place to get burgers and a good BBQ place. Theres a Five Guys nearby that gets me my fix. I tried Backyard Burger and I was not impressed. It may have just been the one that I went to.

Congrats. I feel like Im in the same place with just realizing it wont work for me. Im in one last Math but I feel like Im already ganna fail it, part of me doesnt really care anymore.

I stayed in Crossville TN when I dropped my dad off, that was Hell, literally Hell where people (My uncle, not by blood) were stuck in the f***ing 1900's with WANTING no power, no grocery store, just a water well and a garden to grow their own food because Obama was ganna cause World Meltdown. WTF. Not to mention nothing but meth lab explosions in the paper every single day. I was also in another sexier part of TN for a wedding, I cant remember the name but that was a pretty cool place. Great weather and great views of being in the mountains.

One last thing is that I bet there are alot more American muscle cars than imports.

Well, you're close to my old home. Only about 700 miles due NorthEast. :) It's been 19 years (?) since I actually stopped in Memphis and did something. I was actually there while Tom Cruise was filming "The Firm". He's very short in person, by the way. ANYWAY, we stayed near Beale Street, ate BBQ, went to one of the local bars and partied. It was an awesome time, awesome atmosphere. However, in that 19 years, the crime rate in Memphis has escalated at an alarming rate. Locals will tell you to stay the hell away from the river and don't go outside at night if you live / visit certain areas. With that being said, I'm sure there are awesome places to go. I'm just more aware of the places you should avoid.

What math class is it? And dude, thats crazy, how old was your uncle? Were they amish :rotfl And yea theres a lot more domestic cars here than imports. But there aren't many cars that have work done on them. Only 1 240 I've seen had stuff done to it (slammed, dummy camber, etc). Other than that I'm seeing SUVs/Trucks with wheels the size of Antartica and I saw one orange/cream pearlescent camaro that was lifted and sitting on like 28" wheels

TN is HUGE. I know a lot of people that go to Southern University in Collegdale, so I was thinking "hey, I'll have some buddies over there." Come to find out its 6 hours away from Memphis. You saying 700 miles is "close" is something similar to what I've been hearing from my uncle and aunt, they're going to Pine Bluff Arkansas for a weekend trip :rotfl

I've heard a lot about the crime, thats the first thing my aunt and uncle told me about. "Don't stay at school too late." I thought they were being too cautious, but after doing some research, I got some chills. Luckily, where they live and the campus are in a really nice area. I've only actually stumbled upon the sketchy areas by accident, and I had to drive for a bit before I got there.

Welcome to the Vol State, too bad you're on the other (aka - wrong) side of the state. :)

You end up making it over to eastern part, or even as far over as Knoxville hit me up, well find some bbq and backroads. And you're a lot closer to the Dragon than you used to be. ;)

I make it up to Memphis every now and then. Unfortunately I JUST went, so it will probably be a while before I go back.

I've NEVER had an issue with crime of any sort. I've parked my car riverside and walked to beale st, no problems. The only thing I ever see in Memphis that is bad is either beggars wanting your money, or some dude so strung out on meth that he doesn't know he's human.

WELCOME to the MID-SOUTH

Some weekend when you're downtown and you would like a really good breakfast check out the Arcade Restaurant. There is a good reason this restaurant is a registered Memphis Landmark.

Also, I drive to Memphis to visit the Pull-a-Part salvage yard. The Memphis salvage part prices at Pull-a-Part are are about 50% less than salvage yards in central AR.

So it definitely makes it worth the drive from Little Rock to Memphis if I'm planning to spend over $100 on salvage parts or need a component like an ECU/ECM or BCM.
