Thank you, Atraudes.

I couldn't understand why someone would cut out a gaping hole that large, except maybe in a fruitless attempt to find the sunroof motor. Seeing the size of the pull-down screen, I now understand. I may very well eventually seek one out.

Here's a related question: if the car was equipped with a rear screen, where would the media be played from? A DVD inserted into the CD player? How do I find out if I have DVD playing capabilities?

I appreciate your patience with all these silly questions :eekdance

An update on my progress with this vehicle:

Replaced:
MAF sensor
swirl control solenoid
VIAS control solenoid (which I broke)
upper and lower rear control arms
oil cooler seals
steering rack boot
brake light fuse
missing heated seat fuse
rear carpet
battery

Acquired missing:
spare wheel/tire
jack and tools
center brake light
wheel center cap
right fog lamp and plastic

Fixed:
shift relay or solenoid (by jiggling)
luggage area light (by jiggling)
sticking seat belt at latch (penetrating lube)

Awaiting:
horn relay

Yet to replace:
windshield wipers
battery tie-down
noisy rear shock absorbers
center console/arm rest
nav/climate control
dome light
downstream left oxygen sensor (P0158, P0057)
downstream right catalytic converter (P0420)
cracked and broken front/rear bumpers

Yet to fix:
leaking rear right drum brake
fuel door that won't pop open

Changed motor oil.

Yet to change coolant; transmission, transfer case, and differential fluid.
Yet to change hoses or gaskets.

Cleaned the crap out of everything:
Two passes with cleaning wipes on vinyl.
One pass with cleaning wipes on leather seats.
One pass with leather cleaner/conditioner on leather seats.
Carpet: Scrub/vacuum, baking soda, vacuum, wash/scrub, vacuum.

After much work the car runs well, drives straight, doesn't smell like dog or Axe, and is coming along quite nicely!
