Hello

I am new to the forum but I have spent much time on other car forums.
I currently am] working my way through college and trying to fund my passion for the automotive world at the same time. So wish me luck!!
Ive spent most of my time working on Hondas and learning and building that platform, but i have always wanted to jump into Nissans preferably a 240 :)

My biggest reason for joing the forum was to soak up all the knowledge i can but i have a friend with a 1990 Nissan 240 coupe with the k24e engine he is trying to sell it but it needs alot of work
i was seaking some advice from 240 owners as to if this project would be worth it. So here comes the condition list

Ok so for $800

*the car has no front end (hood, fenders, front bumper)
*no distributor (he says that s all it needs to run)
*engine has 177k
*and it will need painted
* it has two places on the frame that has rusted through. priced patch kit at $250 i have multiple friend that are good welders.
*interior is in good shape
*5spd
*welded diff

So basically i dont have the money to buy a perfect car even if i did i am more interested in working on something and making it mine so that why i am interested in something that needs some work because its fun and i dont have 3000 to throw at a car but i certainly can fix things slowly as i get the money.

Welcome to NICO!

You've got one hell of a potential project there.
Not trying to turn you off 240's, but would suggest you take some emotion out of the equation and approach with more optimism.

It doesn't run. And if it were me, I'd test with a used distributor before even considering buying that car.
Its got some mileage.
Probably has been in an accident if its missing the entire front clip.
Needs paint.
Has rust in a very important structural part of the car.
Will take some getting used to driving with the welded differential- especially in the rain.

It sounds like he or someone else have given the car some tough love and you'll pour a good chunk of change into the car.
At a price just shy of a grand with all of those issues, your're being the better friend by paying him that much to take the problems off his hands. Do yourself a favor and offer him no more than $400 for the car- if you really, really want it that badly.

I think for a few more hundred dollars, you can find a 240 in better structural & mechanical shape than that one.

the front is off the car because the previous owner was going to swap the front to a silvia and when he sold it he let it go without the silvia front end.
diff doesnt bother me because when finished it will not b a DD it will be a weekend tire burner. lol
Do you know of any good websites that oem body panels every time i put it into google body kits pop up everywhere.

Thanks for the input

For OEM used stuff in general check your local junkyards, or http://www.car-part.com which has a listing for a lot of them.

How much do you trust your friend? I agree with frapjap that I personally would not trust that the engine even runs until I see it running. But, if the engine actually does run well after a new distributor, the price isn't terrible, IMO, but I would still offer less.

800 is very steep for that. I paid 1100 for a 92 dual cam (more desirable) with ac and power everything working. New tires and runs fantastic. Had 160k when I bought it. 211k now (9 months later) only thing that has broken is the fuel pump which can be expected at that mileage.

800 is too steep for a car that doesnt run with rust and no front end. At very most id pay 400$ to get useable parts for another car and sell the rest. Is thos a friend you see often? Have you seen the car run? How long has he owned it?

Boils down to if its to good to be true threory. Usually if its a part thats cheap (used distributor) then people bit the 50$ bullet and buy it to sell the car for more. Thats like someone selling a car that (only needs a battery) but there asking 1000$ less then what the rest of the exact same car same conditon cars are selling for. Doesnt make sense to not spend a few dollars to make a bunch of dollars.

Bottom line a dollar over 400 I wouldnt buy it and ive never seen it. Depending how thw interior is and what suspension/ extra parts it has id give hime junk yard prices for it if I even bought it. Dyou sell a junk yard quality car you get junk yard prices.
