Car: Now Jeep GC want G35

Post

I have been wanting a G35 since I test drove one last year. However, I'm willing to wait for a few years to work toward the goal of obtaining one. In the mean time however I have discovered that the I30 is also a very good car. I need a reliable alternative to my not so reliable Jeep Grand C. I have read lots about the I30 I have test drove my friends 2000 and loved it. I checked out what consumer reports had to say about their reliablity as a used vehicle and remain very impressed. What I would like to know is how reliable is a 1997 vs a 2000? Is it the high mileage that causes problems on parts (i guess that sounds stupid, but anyway...) Has anyone had a 2000 or a 97-98 that could help me discover what problems they have had with their car? If a window won't go down, I don't care too much about that, but if the trans breaks down or a $2K repair was needed that inteests me. Please, help me if you can. I'll have more specific questions as I get rolling. Thanks so much for your time everyone.

Michele

Welcome to NICO!

The I30 and the Maxima share the same drivetrain. I have a 97 Maxima with 156k on the odometer, and I love it. I've owned it for just about 3 years now. The only necessary repairs that I have had to make (other than maintenence items) have been the starter, and both axles (due to CV boots splitting). Very reliable vehicles overall.

Welcome to NICO Michele!

I own a 96 I30 and my mom owns a 98. mine has 145,000 miles with very few problems. i have owned it for about 6 months or so and it currently needs a new knock sensor which i believe is because the previous owner continued to put regular instead of premium gas and a vehicle speed sensor. when i purchased it it needed a new strut tower brace, cv boots, new pads and rotors and a new muffler. all pretty much routine matinence things you can expect on all cars. my moms car has fewer miles, about 90k and she hasn't had any major problems. they are very reliable cars that will last a long time if well taken care of. i love my I30 and will continue to buy infiniti's as long as i can afford them because of it.

Well, thanks to you eye30 and maxhopper.

That was pretty helpful. That's the kind of info I need. I don't want to ask a dealer because even if they tell me the truth I guess I just would take them as seriously as someone like you. I appreciate the help. Are there any questions you think I should ask the seller when I go to buy a used I30? I thought the situation of using premium gas regularly would be a good question to bring up, not that they could proove it. Actually, how can you tell? Would a mechaic have to look at it. If I purchase from a dealer how would they know? What other questions could I ask? I have had a bit of a bad time with this used Jeep I purchased. It is a 2000 and I bought it in 03 after my other car got totaled. I wanted something bigger (so I would "feel" safer). Last car was 2000 Mistu Eclipse (It was cute.). Anyway, now I'm a little gun shy. That was my first used car that I ever bought, now I just want something I know I can trust more. 3 months after I bought the Jeep the water pump sprung a leak while on a trip back home to Chi Town (Who did I see on this site that is from there?). That cost about 500 zorks. Then that same winter the front caliper clamped down on the brakes and my wheel would get practically red hot. (I remember seeing the rotor? glow) That was creepy. Anyway 378 bucks later it was running fine and I just started thinking that I may keep it after all. Well, this month in addition to new tires (Normal stuff) I had to plunk down another 125 to fix the caliper again. Needless to say I'm ready for an upgrade. Consumer Reports hates the Jeep by the way. I wish I hadn't been so hard headed when I was buying the Jeep. The dealer tried to convince me to get something else like an Acura or Mazda (They were cheaper too), but I whined "No, I want a Jeep". What a dork. Thanks for your help.

You're not going to able to tell if the owner has used premium fuel or not, you just have to take them at their word. The main thing to look for when buying is to find someone who has their maintenence records to make sure fluid changes have been kept up with (transmission, oil, and coolant).
