Wow! This is a big club. I hope I entered through the proper door.My name is Ron. The last thing I needed was another car. But.......

A colleague at work had a '93 240SX with a leaking coolant problem, & asked my expert opinion as to what he should do with the car. Knowing this car, I suggested he drive it over the nearest cliff. It has a cracked windshield, a scuzzy driver's seat, a power antenna motor that runs well, but has no effect on the actual antenna, faded paint on the bumpers, not much paint left on the hood, a scrambled LCD readout on the radio, with 223,000 miles on the odometer and the original clutch. In other words too many endearing qualities to list, & I semi-jokingly offered him a hundred bucks to take it home & put it out of its misery. He said "Sold". "Huh"? ..."Uh, OK, can I take it for a gallop"? "Sure, here's the key". I did. I took it for a 10 minute ride. "Hey, this thing's uh...peppy". Nice gearbox. The headlights even work! Yes - Sold!

So there it sits in my driveway. Maybe I'll treat it to a fine quality MAACO paint job. Maybe I'll put a fart cannon on it & take it autocrossing. Its cute! My flagship is a Subaru SVX. Lord help me if I drop the fragile transmission in it mowing down cones. Yes - Maybe this rear wheel drive beast will scare off 3 series Bimmers.I hope you folks in this club can help me with all the doofus newbie questions that will come up. First step - fix windshield, radiator & get tags. I can't wait for spring! Thanks in advance for future help.

Ron.

Thanks for the welcome to all of you. As I mentioned, (or did I?) this car COULD stay planted in the driveway until the thaw of spring prompts me to tinker around with it. As to pictures, let's just say I live in ancient times, & I'm still trying to figure out Win 95. However, close your eyes, & imagine a mint, blue, base model fastback. No rust, one imperceptible door ding, & a hood with the clearcoat fully peeled off, then used as a drag strip by 100 neighborhood housecats. It'll probably stay this way for a while.Today the former owner, who I see everyday, brought in some receipts. One for $766 worth of brake work to include calipers & pads everywhere, & two new rotors, done 4 months ago. Another for $565 to include all belts, a thermostat & waterpump done 2 months ago. This is what led to his "That's it"! attitude when the radiator sprung a leak. I felt guilty as I handed him that hundred dollar bill in payment today. I think I should take him to lunch too, don't you?Oh... today's question, & I DID a search under "octane" but didn't have the time to review 900 posts. My pal the former owner used 87 octane in this car from day one. Any brand was fine as long as it was cheap. I tend to agree with his brand philosophy, but the manual says to use 91 or better. The manual also says it's OK to use 87. Huh? Well, after 11 years & 200K plus miles on this thing, with no ill effects on 87 octane stuff, should I go upscale to at least mid grade, or should we assume all the sensors are at peace with nature, & let sleeping sensors lie? Any anecdotal stories welcome.

Regards to all, Ron.

If it runs good with 87, 91 can only make it run better, I would think.

You never know till you try it~

91 helps mine run better than 87 by a considerable difference.

And...AN SVX! Sweet! I aleays thought those were awesome cars, and no one has any idea wtf they are. I browsed an SVX forum for a little while trying to learn more about them back when I was looking to buy one. Very cool cars, both the Scooby and 240. And congrats on the purchase. If you need to know anything that you can't find with the greatly handy Search tool, just ask and the answer ye shall receive....hopefully. :)

Welcome.

Thank you, SeVa. I promised myself not to drone on about the SVX here, as this is Nissan territory, & I spend enough time at the SVX site as it is. However, if you have interest these cars, go to http://www.subaru-svx.net. There's a decent sounding '92 for sale right now for under three grand. Plenty of nut cases over there to help you with any questions too.

Regards, Ron.

Your car will run fine on 87 octane. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between 87 and 89 in mine, I haven't tried 91 yet. If you can tell a difference you might want to splurge on the extra $1-2 per fill-up for the better gas. Congrats on the car, its a steal!

good find, i wish i could find any running car for $100 to turn into a daily beater that i can run crappy gas in and run over stuff without dismay, let alone a good overall shape 240 :D

and the SVX has always been on my list of odd cars i'd like to own, i just can't get past the fact that i've never seen one with a 5 spd gearbox (i've been told they only came with autos and they're pretty dainty ones at that).

anyhow, have fun with the 240, you'll find massive amounts of info on this site so stay a while and let it all sink in :D

NO, you may not come in. Why you might ask? Because It's just not right for anyone to buy a RUNNING 240 cheaper than I bought my rolling shell :D You paid HALF what I did for a decent body! Congratulations on a good find!

Thanks, but let's face it, this was a fluke. I'm greatly honored to have been fluked, but all the stars were in the right alignment for once in my life. Nathan, help me keep things on the cheap. I need a radiator, & I prefer to buy new, or at least "reconditioned". I've browsed a tad & come up with prices from around 140 bucks to over 350. Do you get what you pay for on the aftermarket? Also, are radiators fairly interchangeable within certain model years?Opps.... I should have searched, but since I was already here......

Thanks, Ron.

i once bought a car for 400...oh how i loved that 86 grand am. cheap cars are awesome cuz when i got pissed off at it i would just kick it. like when my thermostat went out and made my car die on me. a nice kick to the door helped me calm down. i love my 240 only paid 850 for it...knowing all the problems that it had i paid to much but somethings you don't know are wrong until you drive the car for about a month. with all the stuff you can do to these cars 100 is a great deal. congrats on your find...wish i was that lucky

Hello and welcome!!

I think that I can officially welcome someone now since I have been here for almost a year and received a lot of help. As far as a radiator is concerned, you might want to check out Phase2Motortrend for a new, aftermarket unit like the Koyo. As far as interchangeablility goes, unless you don't mind fabbing your own hoses, you might be out of luck.

I checked at PartsAmerica and saw that they want $250 for a new stock radiator. Why not spend the extra money and get a unit that's 2 inches thick and will cool that motor down if you decide to go big on upgrades? lol

Anyway, here are the links that you might find useful:

Thanks, supafly. Yes, the SVX only offered an automatic from the factory. It shares a good many similarities with the Nissan 4EAT used in the Pathfinder. It's not really dainty, but it tends to run hot. Many of us have fitted coolers to them. Also, quite a few SVXes trannys have now been swapped out to Legacy or Impreza 5 speeds. The SVX was never intended to be a Mustang. It was marketed to the upper bracket class as a luxury GT, which it is. It was a marketing fiasco. (Good for collectors). As prices have dropped, "kids" have been playing Mustang with 'em. Mine is almost bone stock, & wll stay that way.

(Yeah, I know, I said I wouldn't babble on about SVXes).

Lied! But, I promise to get to know my 240 soon.

Ron.
