I'm new to the the G35. Just got a 2008 G35S and I love it. Does anyone know why shifting from 1 to 2 have a grinding sound. The dealership said it's normal but I refuse to believe that. I think there is something wrong the clutch or transmission. Any ideas

How many miles on it? Sounds like the clutch is on its last leg. Mine did that before it went out. BTW my clutch lasted 23XXX miles.

But I do like to drive spirited in the mountians.

@ awdjdmtalon: Thanks for the reply. I have 26K miles on it so you probably are right. Don't know why the dealership will say it is ok then even though it is under warranty. I noticed that going from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4, the noise is minimized. Did you have yours replaced by the dealer and what was your strategy?

UNFORTUNATELY, clutches are a wear item which is not covered under factory warranty...

Clutches are a wear item, but the transmission is not. Sounds like a syncro problem to me...

Does the transmission have a whine sound at low RPMs?

I had my transmission replaced specifically for this reason.

Any issues when putting it into reverse? That is if the clutch is not fully disengaging then it should affect every gear including reverse. Do you get any resistance when putting into gear while stopped, or taking it out of gear for that matter?

Slick. Mine is out of warranty. It is an 04. (with 25XXX miles) I replaced mine, myself. I am a VW Master Tech. So I have a lift and all the tools. But it was a VERY easy job. Took about 3 hrs. I am guessing it should take about 7 hrs to do it in the driveway.

A stock replacement will be very expensive. I would go with a good aftermarket clutch and flywheel. There are a dozen ones to chose from and anout 100 threads on which one is the best ect.....

I really am with joe on this one... I am having my 3rd transmission installed due to the grinding...

A test to this is if you are sitting stopped can put the shifter into the gear that you are having a problem? Don't push the clutch in and see if you get a grinding sound...

If you do it is your syncros... I have over 53k miles on original clutch and I drive on the same flat roads as you do in FLA... And I often do 4k rpm clutch dumps from stop lights...

I have even taught 5 people to drive a manual in the car!

Was this a certified pre-owned car? If so I would be tempted to take it to another dealer and if it is a clutch it may still be covered under the classification of being a certified pre-owned car. While the warrenty itself is similar to that of a new car, the way I read this is they should have inspected the clutch and transmission prior to certification. By their statement that what you have is 'normal' indicates that they have not put any blame on to you in regard to a bad clutch or a defect in the transmission. To me this sounds like what you have now is then how it was when delivered, after all the dealer states it is 'normal'. There may be other recourse through the state as well depending on how it was represented at time of sale.

pfarmer. The dealer Infiniti dealer I got it from has free engine, transmission, clutches for life. The down side is. They are 5 hours from where I live. And in the next state. The next closest dealer is 2.5 hrs away. I called them and was told that a clutch is a wear item (which I knew) and that they could do nothing for me.

I did a lot of searching ebay and other places and found a clutch/lightweight flywheel for 600.00.

What I am stating is if the car was a certified pre-owned car and they state now that the car is acting normally then you have a statement that could be construed to mean that it arrived to you in this condition since the clutch is one of the items checked for certification.

But you know if they are 5 hours away, that is 10 hours total, then you will be making over 60 bucks an hour without paying taxes on it by taking it to that dealer. I look at that as pretty good wages.
