Car: chess, fixing things that dont work

Post

Greetings to all. I just bought a '93 J30 with 119k on the clock and a few problems. I came across this forum while surfing for one. Hope I can get some good advice here!!

1st - after driving on the highway for about 45min, after stopping then stepping on the gas the car boggs out and stutters like it doesnt want to go. I had to stomp on the gas to kick it into overdrive...???? what is that?

2nd - the front passenger window comes out of the regulator clips when rolled down. Do I need a new regulator or can i just change the clips?

3rd - the rear drivers side window doesnt work at all. I cant here the motor when either main or rear switch is depressed.

4th - exhaust is kinda loud...leak somewhere? exhaust manifold gasket?

5th - Bose radio es muy loco!! The volume knob turns all the way down but the volume doesnt. when a CD is inserted I get an Err msg. pwr ant doesnt work.

What other problems can i expect from this car and is it expensive to maintain? Im a DIY guy so im only concerned about parts and not labor. Is there a place I can go to online to get great prices on parts?

I have the records from the original owner from 93 - 2000 serviced at infinity dealer #70014. Timing belt changed at 60k('97)tension rods replaced at 78.9k ('98), new ignition, starter, lower engine cover & fuel inj cleaning at 89.5k ('00), and new transmission and radiator at 56.3k ('97).

I just bought Mobil1 synthetic blend, Lucas oil stabilizer & fuel treatment, Purolator oil & air filter and PCV valve, Bosch Platinum +2 plugs, alt, ps, ac, timing belts. Is there anything else i would need besides a water pump? Should I change the fuel filter, do ignition timing, new wires & distr. cap??

Hope this post wasnt too long...Thanx in advance to any and all replies...Hope to be visiting this board on a daily basis...

I will cover just the subjects I know and will let the J30 guys cover the rest.

1) Absolutely! Just be sure to take our advice, even if it make you go back to store and return some parts , this site has a huge track record of helping PPL who follow our advice and we also have a bunch of PPL that wrote us back about the dire results of not following it.:)

2)Yes J30 exhaust are pretty qiet.3)Try our stereo forum for this one:http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....id=994) Not too many, this is one of the most reliable and cheap ( by lux standarsds only) car to keep on road5)Here:http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/Default2.aspAsk for Joe tell him your from NICO they always hook us up with <significant> discounts6) That is Very very good!!7)Do <not> use the following: Lucas oil treatment has been observed by me (and others) to overwhelm an oils anti foaming additive package (and probably other additives as well). I know nothing about their fuel additives but the consensus on this site is the best fuel addtives (detergents) are Techron injector cleaner and (even better) all B&G productsFilters : Not <not> use any other air filter than OEM dealer, many years of experience (and experiments) among our members have shown those to be the best, as for oil filters the pruolators are ok but OEM better (as is Bosch and select others). Also do not use any Bosch plugs in your car, time and again we find members w/ mysteriorus drivability and power problems and it turns out they used Bosch Plat+2 or +4.Use NGK OEM spec only (even tho one techs expereince says Denso are as good).Switching to these plugs also cures the above mentioned members problems instantly.Yes change the fuel filter ( Again use OEM-dealer part <only> you dont want fibers from an sloppy aftermarket filter clogging your injkectors).

Other members will chime in with advice more sage than mine soon.

Fred...:)

Radio problems.

Try http://www.carstereohelp.com

Had mine repaired there with no problems, bose is known to have problems. Alot cheaper than new and replacing the whole system out.

They also give good instructions on removeing door panels for you to repairs some of the other problems

Search is a very valuable tool here, can provide bookuu of info.

Another site for J30 engine info is http://www.z32.net and http://www.twinturbo.net. The J30 has the same engine as these cars and alot of the maint info and repair info on the engine is the same.

Good luck

Bookuu is Ebonics for beaucoup, slang from French, meaning many.

Given the recent US/French relations, I think I'll stick with "Ebonics" :D

Thanx for the replies. I just sold my '89 525i last month and was on the BMW reference site and forum for the past 2 years and got great feedback for a DIYer. It looks like i'll be getting the same type of priceless info from people that love they're cars as much as I do, and have me checking in daily even if I dont have a problem or info to share.
