Car: G35 Coupe Silver

Post

Hi everyone. I just bought my 2005 G35 Coupe Silver Auto 2 days ago. It's probably the best car I've ever owned, extremely happy. Anyways as to not annoy everyone I've been searching the forum for a few days trying to find my answers. Anyways I had a few quick questions and maybe someone can set me in the right path or have a good answer.

1. What mods are CARB legal? I've had it up to here (points over head) with dealing with Cali smog. My old car became such an issue I couldn't pass smog. I'd like to just get some parts, add a few ponies, alittle louder exhaust as the stock sounds great but I'd like alittle more volume. What mods can I get that have that little sticker that makes all those smog guys happy and let me pass? Inakes? Exhaust? Spacers?

2. Where can I get a good OEM spoiler? I saw a few on Ebay but question the quality, does anyone have one?

3. How much was your window tint? What % did you get? Could you post pics if you have a silver car so I can get a rough idea?

Thanks I hope to be around for awhile.

Ron

Welcome to NICO. Congrats on your new purchase. You just bought a fun ride and a car you can almost punish endlessly without a single headache. Many on our forums actually race their cars and yet their cars are daily drivers. Well done!

I had a 1996 3000GT SL that I put in a Twin Turbo Motor and about 40k in mods... It was quite the intresting battle. But I'm glad to have done it, now I know better.

Welcome to NICO!

Nice rides!! I had a 3000GT VR4 back in the day...sweet car!

We have a few guys with G's from Cali so they can let you know the CARB legal stuff...but I would say that most parts from the big aftermarket companies are CARB legal.

Here are a few essential mods:

1. JWT or Stillen POP charger with the Z-tube2. MREV2 (lower intake plenum mod)3. 5/16 plenum spacer4. CAT-back exhaust. I have stillen...but HKS and greddy are both good.

Check out the G-series FAQ (in my sig) for more info.

Welcome! Love the 3000GT, fun cars.

Here's what I would do to stay CARB legal:STILLEN Exhaust http://www.stillen.com/product...202DREngine Damper http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...oriesUR / STILLEN Pulleys (type depends on stereo option) http://www.stillen.com/browse....202DRIntake - Z-Tube/K&N (or remove baffle from your G-tube) or JWT PopchargerPlenum Spacer (motordyne, blox) or new upper Plenum (Kinetix, cosworth)

if its 5 Speed auto (5AT) then I would get some grounding wires

For #3 I have a silver g35 sedan with 35% tints all around (except front)35% is the legal limit in MD...the product used is 3M Color Stable film which comes with a lifetime warranty (ie if it turns purple, bubbles, etc. the shop will redo the tints for free).

Hope this helps & congrats on your new car!

This almost seems pointless since the spacer alone gives the most gains. The Mrev2 won't make a huge improvement (per motordyne).

Engine Damper
Go with stiffer engine mounts.
tollboothwilley wrote:Intake - Z-Tube/K&N (or remove baffle from your G-tube)
+1 on the z-tube. FAIL on removing G-tube baffles. One of them is integrated into the piping .

I can provide the wires, if you're interested.

The mods you'll want to stay away from are hi-flow cats (though the smog tech probably would never look).

Test pipes-OBVIOUSLY!!!.

Most headers-Though DC's are supposedly CARB legal. A couple others might be as well.

Most of the big name companies have all gotten CARB exemption.

Congrats on the new purchase. I, too, just sold my '92 Stealth RT / TT. Sooo much fun!!! However, I'm sure you'll find out these cars do not disappoint. As you can see, many of the members are a wealth of knowledge.

Welcome to Nico!

I would suggest you exercise caution when buying parts if they're not CARB legal... Just to be on the safe side.

For tint, I would say go less than 20% in all 5 windows, it will look really clean, and offer you some privacy.

I went with 5% limo in the back 3, but it's illegal here to do the drivers and passenger windows So I'm stuck here.... If I had it over I would've gone with a 35% all around, to avoid cops, and to keep each window looking consistent, just me.

For mods, you can check out the sticky threads for FAQ, it will get your head into the modding world for the G35, which I know is greatly different than the 3000GT.

My buddy has a nice clean 3000GT, they are sweet cars. Now, we need pics of the old Mitsubishi, and pics of the G to compare.... Do you plan on dropping 40K on this one too? I know we could help you with that Grant

Do shops not do the tint for you regardless of the laws? Shops here in TN will apply illegal tint and toss a sticker on it saying it's legal.

you're right...he has an AUTO....the below info is for 6MTs

Motordyne website

MREV 2 Manifold:

The Motordyne MREV 2 Manifold is high-torque plenum mod designed for use on any VQ engine.

When used with a 5/16" spacer on the REVUP engine, every test to date shows MREV 2 Manifold will add a "minimum" of 15+ HP and 18+ TQ at 4500 RPM. MREV 2 Manifold is easily the single most effective bolt on modification available for the REVUP VQ engine.

When used with on the non-REVUP engine, the gains are very similar to that of the 5/16" spacer but the MREV 2 Manifold will show a slightly lower peak value, with a slightly higher average value and a slightly higher TQ value. Overall, MREV 2 Manifold provides "area under the curve" and is the highest gain plenum mod available.

So how do I know if I have the revup engine? What's the revup engine anyway?

The average power gains on a 260 or 280hp motor (non-rev-up) are better than the 5/16" spacer. This modification increases power across a very wide rpm range. The MREV2 should be used without a spacer on the standard engine, unless fuel/ECU modifications have been performed as it may cause the engine to run lean.-- http://www.everythingg35.com

They'll do it, but they tell you it is illegal as a warning... I don't like to mess with the police too much so I said do the 3 back windows... he said if I change my mind, he'll finish the front for $75 if I keep my reciept.

My understanding is 05+ have the rev-up engine, but I don't Know for sure.

I guess this MREV 2 is on my list of things to do.

I was kidding about wondering about the rev-up motor as that used to be a very common question, just like the question of whether to go with the MREV2, the spacer, or both.

List of motors to determine what exactly you have.http://forums.g35club.org/zerothread/327050

For the sake of our new members, I'll shed some light on the situation.

03-04 G35 coupe and sedan have the "non-REVUP" engine. Only a spacer is needed.

05-07 G35 6MT coupe and 05-06 G35 6MT Sedan have the "REVUP" engine. The MREV2 lower plenum will give you a nice bump in HP/TQ and move the curve to a more usable RPM range. The MREV2 plus a 5/16" spacer is recommended for maximum gain.
