"dealer wants five hundred for entire assembly"

The dealership doesn't know what they are dealing with. That part is no longer available and there's no way to get it. Maybe you will find in a junkyard, but it'll be hard to find one in good condition. Yes, there's a way to fix and I'll post a picture ASAP. Take out the entire assembly and you can fabricate with a metal piece. I did it to my car and it works perfect and I can gurantee that it'll never break again. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics, when I fixed it, but I have a picture of the outcome. At least, it'll give you an idea how to do it... I've had a problem with quarter window(both RH & LH) 3 times since I got my vert, and now I can fix it with my eyes closed. No joke...

the price on the motor seems very steep. i would do some shopping around. you can probably find one on ebay for a decent price.

as far as interior panels go, there's not much you can do except replace them. If you have the mechanical ability, you could change your doors over to coupe doors and move the seatbelts back to the chassis. The coupe interior door panels are made of a much better material and you'll shed right under 100 lbs from the car

Sorry for the huge pic, but I thought this would help. Take out the assembly and put a metal piece just like what I did in the picture. Make a template with a coke can and cut it. I used small garden shovel from a dollar store and it was thick enough to cut, bend and function right after the installation. If the metal is too thin, it won't work. If it's too thick, you won't be able to cut it with sheet metal cutter. You might have broken other 2 plastic pieces that goes inside of the rails. If there's just a crack, you can use glue gun to fill the middle to reinforce it. If it's completely broken, you have to get a thick plastic piece and fabricate it. I used snow scraper(thick and durable plastic) and soldering iron, dremel and sand paper to fabricate it and it worked just fine. I wish I had some pics of those. If you don't take care of those other 2 rail guides, what's going to happen is... Window will move back and forth although it's all the way up. If they are half broken, it'll still work though. To check this, roll your window up 2/3~3/4 and try to move it back and forth. If it moves, you have broken rail pieces.

Hardest part is putting the assembly back in. If you don't do it right, you will have a leak, wind noice, interior door trim(seat belt portion) hitting rubber seal on the window, window not going all the way down, weather stripping getting messed up...etc. Be patient and you'll eventually figure it out. Somehow you find the brand new part, but if you don't adjust the assembly right, that plastic piece will snap again soon because that plastic piece can't take the tension from the arm. I was able to find a new part back in 2001 and a professional guy replaced it, but guess what it broke again because he didn't do a good job. I did it myself second time and it's been working just fine. When the other side broke 3rd time, the part was no longer available. Even though new part is strong and flexible enough to take the tesion, as time goes by, it'll age and won't be able to take it anymore. Anyway, please ask me if any of you guys have trouble fixing it. I'll try my best help you guys. I had enough on this issue. BTW, I checked out quarter window system of S13 Silvia, Infiniti vert even old Cabalier vert because size of quarter window looked same and they also have same front seat belt system, but all of them were different and our 240sx vert has the worst design and mechanism. Emailed Nissan and ASC, no response. Thought about custom making by plastic molding company, but price was ridiculous. Searched every junkyard in the U.S. & Canada, but everyone had assembly with broken plastic piece. Nissan or ASC should have reinforced the part with metal or at least made easy to replce just the plastic part. Well, it's another example of poor engineering....

heres a link to the thread about the rear quarter window fix

just curious what is the problem with your engine, is it kind of a ball bearing ish noise, if so research everything you can about the timing chain guides, cause that's a very common issue on these engines.

good luck with the fixs, i'm working on very similar issues,

that price for install is way high, swapping the engine stock for stock takes a few hours max. As for the motor if its used thats too high but that may be a rebuilt one. I'd probably skip it for a cheaper one with lower mileage from the junkyard. Also, you need a new mechanic. anytime someone says "my mechanic says the motor blew" and they don't know what "blew" on the motor I tell them to get a new mechanic. a good mechanic will explain to you what is wrong, whether it can be fixed or not, and whether a used, rebuilt, or new replacement would be a better alternative.
