heater works only when hit

How come my heater on the 1994 Altima only works when it is hit on the bottom sideof the housing. Thought it might be the resistor. Now i am not to sure . Could trash be in the unit? It stops working when the switch is off but, works occasionally. This is my daugters school car and it is not at home often. I need to fix it before she goes back to school. Help Please.

Sounds like the motor--put a multimeter on the motor and see if the power is there/ move the wires fan switch around see if you can get it to cut out/come on.

What exactly stops working? Does the blower fan stop? Does the air just not get hot?
