Heater question

I have 2014 Rogue SV with 48,000 miles. The ventilation system is doing something strange for the last month. You get used to the drone from the ventilation fan, after driving 15-30 minutes the tone changes, like you went from outside air to recirculating air.
Then some of the air controls wouldn't work. Pressing the mode button doesn't change the output, it goes dash vents or dash plus windshield. I always blow the air at my feet, with outside air. I don't want it at the dash or windshield.

Sorry for the late response - is this happening while Auto mode is engaged? I have found that my wife's controls are rather totalitarian when that mode is activated, and the only way to modify how it's behaving is to deactivate auto mode.

If not, then your ghosts in the machine sounds fairly accurate, and sadly not uncommon for any controls on the dash in the new Rogue according to much of what I have read.
