Heater issues

Ok so I decided to check my heater this evening and its not working. It worked fine with the KA in the spring.

Does it matter which hose goes where? right now I have them like this: The rear one (closest to firewall) is going to the valve. The front one is going directly to the firewall.

I can see the valve open and shut. The hose going to the valve gets hot so I assume this is the outlet(motor) and inlet(heater core).

The only things I can think is A. the hoses are backwardsB. the inside of the valve isn't actually opening
