ok..... Check coolant first, if it is up to level (or appears to be), then the next thing to check for is if there is any coolant smell in the cabin, or if there is any liquid that is leaking into the inside of the passenger cabin (take out the floor mats, check for wetness, there shouldnt be any if the heater core is good)
if all is good, the the problem is that your heater core is cloged, or that your air box doors are not operating properly
the heater core can be cleaned while still installed (if it is in a good shape), just take out the hoses that connect to it from the engine bay on the firewall (tight area but very doable, and you will need to drain 2 liters of coolant before you start the procedure), then hook up a high pressure hose into one end, pump air or water into it (from the left heater core pipe if you are looking at the car from the front, if nothing comes out, then try from the other pipe that is on the right side), that should clear up any junk that is piled up over the years, then install everything back and test it............. i must warn you though, if the heater core is about to go, then it will start to leak when you pump high pressure air/water into it, which will make changing the heater core a must....... i hope this helps, good luck
