I've had my 2015 Q70 about a month and love it, but the one thing that has been bothering me is that the heated steering wheel gets too hot... I have to turn it off after a few minutes. For the most part, the controls are ergonomically placed, but the heated steering wheel button is way down on the lowest button panel... and that I need to switch it off while driving, it's not in the greatest position. I'm just wondering if this is normal... the manual seems to indicate the heat will cycle on and off. I called the dealer service department and they thought it seems to be behaving normally... just wondering others' experiences with this.

Yes, with my M37 I have a very good and almost too good of a steering wheel heater. It is normal.

In my 2011 it does cycle with heating up quite high to the point of hot but not painful (close to uncomfortable); then it will let out and stay just warm and reheat again to very hot. I was surprised when I first bought it at how hot it actually got.

It may be that they changed the software for 2015 and cycle down intensity was adjusted. But I don't think it should be uncomfortable to hold on to the wheel. If that's the case then you should insist at the service looking into it more.

I think that if my heat level would stay at hi all the time I wouldn't be able to drive with it on for a longer period of time.

This is normal and mine (2011) definitely cycles. I think it also may be tied in to your temperature in the car. When it gets hot, is your car set to 90* or something? That's when mine seems to get piping hot. If I set the car to 75*, it doesn't get as hot.

My temp is set to 70, so I don't think that's it. I think I'll try seeing how long it takes before cycling off... my bare hands get a bit uncomfortable, so I'll try wearing gloves and see if it is really cycling. I may just be overly sensitive to the hotter temps--I am Minnesotan, after all.

I confirmed today that my heated steering wheel does cycle off if I let it run long enough, but it really does get too hot for my bare hands. With leather gloves, it seemed about right--I could feel the heat through them for sure, but didn't feel overly hot. So... I think this is working as designed.

I also confirmed that today. I think it cycles in 10 minute intervals.

I have not used mine. Nice option but in my case not needed. Once heated, and the cabin temp gets to say 72/74 you don't need it anyway. Especially if you have gloves..... Up north the requirements there are different.

I turn mine on when I start the car and then turn it off after I start driving....Heated steering wheel is not a full time convenience in my mind. More a "as needed" button you can push.

Or just man up. I bought mine for a lot of awesome features...a heated steering wheel was not one of them

I leave mine on until it turns itself off. Never find it painful.

Love having it, especially in these upstate NY winters. My water in the house has frozen twice now...freakin hate this place.

I love mine. I turn it on every time I start the car. Even with gloves, when it's negative degrees, all the "manning-up" in the world won't keep your hands warmer than a heated steering wheel. Driving with bulky gloves can be unsafe, especially when you need the control the most in the winter.

My 2012 gets very hot as well but not to the point where its uncomfortable to touch. The longer you leave it on the cooler it will get. Shut off time is 30-minutes if you just let it run.

Hahaha, I've never once used the heated wheel on mine.

I use mine a few times a year and it works great. It does get hot which is a good thing in the morning at 17 degrees. Once the cabin warms up I shut mine off.

lol yeah.

I use mine even in 60* weather sometimes on a cool night...I'll put the windows down, heat on blast and wheel on heat. Beautiful mix of fresh crisp cold air and warm heat.

Both my wife and I feel that the heated steering wheel gets too hot to comfortably hold continuously. This encourages the driver to turn off the steering wheel heater while driving. Unfortunately, the switch is located in the lowest bank at the drivers left knee where it is very difficult to see. It is also in close proximity to the switches to turn off the vehicle dynamic control, back-up collision intervention and warning systems.

All of the above combined result in the driver having to direct their attention away from the road and to the lower control panel and, in addition, makes it likely that they will inadvertently turn off a vehicle safety system.

The service manual provides a range of 68F - 86F. The dealer measured mine at 120F. Since this closely matched another Q70 on the lot it was deemed "normal". I submit that it is not and believe that it needs to be attended to before it results in an accident.

I put a steering wheel cover on mine (trying to reduce the regular wear and tear) and the wheel stays warm, but never uncomfortable. :chuckle:

Just one more reason I picked South Florida as my adopted home away from home.

I dunno guys...I love how toasty it gets. RealFeel* right now is 7...7 degrees. It's amazing to have a wheel heater.

In winter, when it's -25C outside the heated steering wheel feels barely warm (and happily welcomed).
In winter, when it's -5C outside the heated steering wheel feels perfect.
In summer, steering wheel heater feels hot (and pointless).

I still have the issue of it getting too hot, but have adapted by wearing my gloves... which partially defeats the advantage of having a heated steering wheel, but it still feels nice.

The heated steering wheel system is
designed to operate only when the surface
temperature of the steering wheel is below
68F (20C).
Push the heated steering wheel switch to
warm the steering wheel after the engine
starts. The indicator light *1 on the switch
will illuminate.
If the surface temperature of the steering
wheel is below 68F (20C), the system will
heat the steering wheel and cycle off and
on to maintain a temperature above 68F
(20C). The indicator light will remain on as
long as the system is on.

NOTE:
If the surface temperature of the steering
wheel is above 68F (20C) when the
switch is turned on, the system will not
heat the steering wheel. This is not a
malfunction.
