heat shields

the heat shields on my 01 pathfinder's exhaust are rusted and falling off.are they necessary and should they be replaced?

I guess I can't speak for Pathfinders, but Nissans in general always end up having rusty heat shields that fall off. I've had two others in the past where I just tore them off the rest of the way -- no problems.

I ripped mine off years ago...that rattle drove me nuts.

Just remember that the engineers put them there for a reason! Our motors generate a lot of heat and it's good to have those in place.

But like Kouki said, if they rust and rattle, rip'em out.
