Heat Shield

The heat shield below the Cat converter fell off of my 97 I30, the bolts holding it were rusted. Is this (the heat shield)necessary for the safe operation of the vehicle. I live in the northeast, near the ocean and severe winter weather so under carriage rust tends to be a problem.

no, you dont need it, in fact, a lot of people take off their heat shield because they tend to rattle a lot. i took off all of my heat sheilds.
