heat shield needed?

You guys know the heat shield under our cars that the exhaust pipes flow, are those really needed? My friend took his off and he said that all of them put together seriously weighted about 20+ pounds.

I took off mine, I think they are useless.

yea the only thing that they do is make annoying rattleing sounds. it wont hurt to take them off.
