Anyone want to make a guess at a diagnosis?

I'm getting a LOT of heat off of my manifold the last month or so. The heat shield was taken off a few months ago (as most people do eventually when it starts to rattle), and for the most part didn't notice anything.

Lately, however, the heat coming off the manifold is making the floor of the driver's side, right where my heel rests when it is on the gas pedal, very very warm. Like, warm enough to heat up the rubber in my shoes and make the rubber soft.

Muffler shop put it on the hoist, felt the pipes -- seemed ok -- and said to put a heat shield on it. But the amount of heat I am getting now is fairly recent.

Any ideas why the manifold is getting so warm? It's a very concentrated spot... it's not like the whole length of the exhaust is getting this warm. Was thinking of giving my engine a nice SEAFOAM bath and a tune up in the near future anyways, but if someone has an idea as to cause of this heat, that would be wicked.

Oh, it's a '92 240 hatch back

it really sounds like a leak, any change in the sound of the exhaust

you could always get those "header wraps" things that go on headers and insulate them

Seems like a far off shot, but nothing is stopping the flow of exhaust, is there? Like up inside the pipe? Just as an idea, if something was slowing exhaust flow that could make things more heated.

Could be a leak... would explain the occasional whiff of funkiness I get... dunno what would be leaking though. Everything seems ok with fluid levels and what not.

Exhaust has always been a little noisy... haven't noticed a big change in the sound of it though.

there is a hole in the exhaust by the area that gets hot. it is shooting out hot exhaust gas onto the metal by your foot.

that is the same thing that I am thinking 240kid! I don't know of anything else that could be the problem... And it wouldn't have to be a big hole, in fact it might be VERY, VERY small. You might need to have the engine run and CAREFULLY put your hand near the area in question and see if you feel exhaust gas hitting your hand... But de very careful if you do that.... it can really hurt....

hmmm... well, thoroughly felt the pipe and didn't detect a hole, so if there IS a hole, it is tiny.

NISTECH in the Mechanic section said that it could be a restriction somewhere in the exhaust, or maybe the pipe just needs the heatshield and that's that.

id do what arrow said, but make sure the engine is completely cool when you do it. that way, the exhaust wont have warmed up yet, but it gets hot quickly. if you dont find anything, put the shield back on like nistech said. he always knows what he is talking about

well, definitely not a hole in the exhaust. Got it on a lift and the pipe was fine. And definitely not a case of high ambient temperature... this pipe is getting too hot.

I thought it could be a blockage in the exhaust system somewhere, but the car is not suffering ANY loss of power. If there was enough of a blockage to cause the pipe to get so hot, I should notice a loss in power.

Thinking I might be running rich, or have leaky injectors. Fuel might be igniting in the manifold which is causing it to get hot. It might explain why I get a slight smell of gas from the exhaust and a fairly regular whiff of "rotten egg" from the cat.

Ah! Excellent point...

No soot and, as far as I know, no black smoke from the exhaust.

So stumped...

Man, oh man is this one of those extremely confusing problems!

It doesn't seem to be hurting your gas mileage or performance.... But it can't be good fro your car! Maybe if you put back on the heatshield the problem will go away... Only thing that I can think of...

I am stumped too....

Alright, a savvy mechanic finally figured it out:

The MAFS is intermittent. The mixture is going between lean and rich, causing the pipes to heat up. When I first had the problem, it was just the heat. It killed the cat recently, which is what tipped them off.

So ya, dead MAFS. Having a hard time finding a used one. Looking at $900 CDN for brand new. Ouch. This car might be going straight to the junkyard. Not worth the money anymore.

I thought the exhaust manifold gets hot when the car's running lean...
