I did something horrible to my KA in my 92 240sx, I have a 91 240 for a swap. I was wondering if while Im doing the swap there is anything I should do or look for to prevent problems down the road. I'm not preparing for megapower or anything, just toyota-like reliability.

The donor has a lot of issues. Some boy-ricer got ahold of it and trashed it. Mechanically, it responds fine, but the wiring is hosed. The cluster insturments don't respond right, it has trouble idleing after a few blips, the check engine light is on, and it smells rich. I'm hoping it will be fine after the swap, but I would just like to know about any trouble spots.

well, if you are replacing the entire engine anyway its very likely that all the sensors and components may solve your problems, granted you have a new MAF. Otherwise, research how to carefully clean that, as well as the new iacv valve. also, if the inside of the new motor you got looks varnished or black (it should not look like that, i have one tht does and one that doesnt) i would replace the main and rod bearings.

Things to definately do while the motor is waiting to be put in the car:replace the front and rear main seal, of my four motors three of the front main seals were toast, and on two the rear main seals were toast. They always go, this is a great investment.oil pan gasket, front timing cover gasket, upper timing cover gasket, check your water pump (even though its hard to see a leaking one if the motor isnt running) and its gasket, might as well do the thermostat houseing gasket while youre down there, maybe even check your current thermostat while its out.If you have the dough for it definately buy the nissan timing chain kit, everyone pisses and moans about there timing chain noise at some time or another

If nothing else, research about the iacv valve and cleaning it, the MAF, and definately check out your EGR or research on blocking it. The temperature sensor is the culprit for your idle problem if none of these things are the problem (it the red one on the intake manifold right next to the bleed hole bolt, the one that says never open when hot and it right next to your upper radiator hose.) Hopefully the new one on your motor solves that problem. i'm rebuilding a few KAs right now so any specific problems you encounter i can probably help you with

Thanks, I think I see oil seepage around every gasket you mentioned. Some guy tried to repaint the valve cover (so he could tell his friends he has a "red top") and i don't think he did a good job sealing it up agian. I'm going to bypass all that EPA junk and probably use all the important sensors from the old car. Are the water pumps the "rebuildable" sort or do I have to shell out for a whole new deal?

water pump is cheap and easy, i would just pull it off, check if its insanely rusty and then decide if i wanted to replace it

you could run it and make sure its all good before you buy one, its easy to replace with the motor in the car, plus nissan water pumps are generally pretty good about not going out. i didnt answer your question cuz i dont know, its much easier to buy a new water pump, i dont know if its rebuildable.
