Problem: I randomly noticed that when I turn off my headlights, they don't go down. (They are of course the pop-up kind.) Lights still work. I don't hear a motor sound, or any indication that they are stuck. When the motor goes out do they have a safety mechanism that keeps them up so you aren't left in the dark? Is there one motor or two? How hard are they to replace? Could it be something as simple as a fuse?

Thanks!

Update: lol, nevermind me. I just remembered that there was that headlight button to the left of the steering column and pressed that on a whim. And hey! It worked. Guess one of the mechanics must have bumped it when I had it in the shop. But I could have sworn that I have pressed that button in the past, then toggled the headlights and it went back down. Hmmm.

The button should have a little headlight symbol, which looks more like an eyeball viewed in profile really, along with a bidirectional arrow beside it.

Keep in mind that if your headlights are already on and up, pressing the switch will not cause them to close (unless you've done the squint-mod that some of the Z drivers do).

If all else fails and they really are stuck, you can always pop the hood, remove the motor shaft caps beside the headlights, and manually twist the shaft to open or close them.

yep, you'll have to get a scanned copy of the headlight wiring diagrams & trace the short circuit/open wire/fusible link/fuses/relays/ or the switch itself might be bad...

I only have a FSM for an 89 & it contains 5 pages on wire diagrams just for the headlights!

why can't it be like the military? I'm a mechanic in the military and fixing things has never been so easy.

For an example: your headlights are out, they would tell you to check continuity of blah blah blah, if yes, go to blah, if no, go to blah blah and keep doing that and it'll eventually find out if the switch is bad or the wiring is bad, or in most case, the headlight bulbs...pretty cool. I wish we have something like this for civilian cars.

I think they do have something like that--it's called a Service Manual. I was a mechanic in the military also, and it's my understanding that the service manual is almost just like what we had in the military. Good luck finding one though--it's not that easy and they are about $60 if you can find one. Check E-Bay periodically--I have seen auctions for them from time to time.
