I just bought my first car, a '90 240 hatch. This thing is RIDDLED with problems! the mechanical issues weren't mentioned when I bought it, but I knew that the right headlight wouldn't close. I'm trying to fix that at the moment cuz I'm gonna let a mechanic do the engine work. If I close the headlights, and then use the little hand wind for the left one, they will both open up when I turn them on, but then the right one won't go back down with out me doing it manually. Why would this be? Any advice? What should I check/test to determine the problem? thanks

Okay, you're wording is confusing the hell out of me.

I am to understand that:1) you have a headlight stuck open when you shut the lights off2) you tried twisting the emergency close knob and it worked3) now the other light will not close when you turn the lights off?

tell me if im even close and please for gods sake i know you like commas, but you need to use this thing called a period.

Sorry. The commas thing is a bad habit I guess. The left one will go up and down just like it's supposed to. The right one will go up but then won't come back down even if the left one goes down. the emergency knob will bring it down and then it'll come back up when I want it too. But it'll stay up until I use the emergency knob.

Either the "down" relay is broken for your right headlight or the wiring has been damaged. Let me get the specs and colors from the FSM, be back in like 10 mins.

Its really effing complicated.

I would try checking the continuity in the lighting switch in the steering wheel first.

It acts the same way whether I'm actually turning the lights on or just pressing the button that raises them up. Then again...my brights don't work. The lights go out completely when I switch to high-beam.
