I came across this posted on the realm and thought it should be shared here as well...
it is geared towards a 510 but the basic wiring would be the same for our trucks, just the stock wiring would be different
thanks to tmpnet (peter) for posting it up

Good info Paul. Would this be if you plan on running HID or a higher wattage headlight?

MKlotz did something like this and a few others..
got brighter lights due to less resistance of the old switch heating up or something like that...
It will be what I use when I put in the 150 watt high beams I'm getting...
not sure on HID's but definately H3's...

the alt won't get you brighter lights by itself...
just gives the system more amps to draw from...
bypassing the switch with a relay like this should brighten up the lights a bit due to the resistance of the old wire and the switch...
I just put in an Amp meter to see exactly how much power I was using...
even with everything on, lights, wipers, heater, brake lights, no sterio installed..
I was drawing less than 20 amps...
I'm going to see what the 150 watt lights will draw when I get them from Oz...
then I'll decide on whether or not to get a new Alt...

Here's the bulbs I'm getting:

I was going to get these:

but decided to go for the power!
Even thought about getting these:

FYI when searching for bulbs, Par 46 is the 5 3/4" units...
Par 56 are the 7" ones

The problem with the trucks is that all of the headlight juice goes through the switch.....so you use the switch to turn on a relay and let it carry the juice.  Then the headlight switch only handles the running/dash lights.  You can pick up the trigger wire at the headlight relay.  All the stock headlight relay does is switch the juice from the switch to the high and low beams.

I'll resist putting up my opinion of the lights.....since I absolutely hate having those GD HID lights in my rear view mirror!!!:X
