headlight problem on 02 q

right headlight goes on only after i turn the switch on and off a couple times then it shuts down again. From previous posts and searching i believe it to be the HID control unit for the passenger side light. It seems hard to get to. If there is some easy way to fix this problem let me in on it. From what i understand the front bumper needs to be removed. Does anyone know how much this part should cost? Dealer quoted me $270 just for the bulb! Thats insane. Help would be appreciated thanks.

Known problem on these cars, you can buy a used ballast and/or bulb, its one or the other. Do not buy the bulb from the dealer, look online and you'll find plenty, the ballast might be found on car-part.com

I would swap the ballasts side to side (assuming they're the same) and see if the problem follows the ballast. If it stays on the right side, I would look toward the bulb. check out your FSM at http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45

Look up headlight assembly and you'll find lots of them, look for an ad that says "ballast only", wrecked cars often have broken housings but the ballast should be safe.
