while driving my s13 today I noticed that my headlights look like theyre flickering a little bit when I'm accelerating hard. I cant really tell from the front because I refuse to let anyone drive my car (let alone drive it hard), but it looks like they shudder a little bit based on the light they cast on the road. Anyone know what this could be? Some sort of voltage drop that happens at high RPMs? Any idea?

Could be the alternator isn't putting out enough juice to power all your **** while the engine is turning so fast.

You have a dome light? Where on your roof is it? Cuz I don't have one :(

My 90 coupe has one, your 89 doesnt? Even my friends 89 hatch has one but his is SE, dont know if it makes any diffrence. My coupe is the base XE. Its right in the center of the roof, cant miss it.

Anyway, to the first question, your alternator maybe crapping out. My died last weekend, had the same symptoms plus everything dimmed at idle.

Right in the center of my roof is the moon roof, or sun roof, I dunno the difference between the two. Could that possibly be aftermarket and the dome light was just taken out for it?

Oh and I checked the price on the two map lights thing behind where the mirror bolts on... for $170 from the dealer I could get lots of more important things.... like getting my car back to normal :( sigh

Straight from the 240sx.org FAQ's:

Headlight Flickering

Question:

My passenger side flip up headlight flickers and sometimes just doesn't work. I have checked to make sure the connection to the headlight is OK and best as I can tell the filament is OK. Is this a common problem and what can I do to fix it?

Answer:

There are two headlight retracting relays, one for each headlight. One of them may be defective causing your problem. The relays are located on the driver's side of the engine up front under the air filter air box. You might try swapping them to see if the problem goes over to the other headlight.

Give it a check/look and see what happens :)
