I have a 1993 240SX that has its passenger side headlight sticking up and wont retract down. The interesting thing is, it works find in one direction., ie., it would go up using the control switch but to make it go down I have to manually rotate the motor by opening the hood.My question is if this could be a faulty motor given that the motor works in one direction just fine.I tried to look for the working mechanism of the motor by reading the wiring diagrams etc, but I cant figure out how the 4 relays and the detector switch work? Could it be one of the relays or the detector switch or the control switch?

Any other areas I should check?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like a bad detecting switch IMO.

You can try this. Manually open and then close it all the way. Sometimes the motor gets off track so to speak with the detecting switches and if you go a full cycle manually, that will sometimes get it back on track.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately it did not fix my problem. Here's what I did, please let me know if I should have done something different.

Opened the cap on the motor and turned the knob in the direction of the arrow until the headlamp completed one cycle of closed to open position and repeated again. I also attempted to use the headlamp control switch by leaving the motor knob at various positions of the headlamp.

Could this be a defective detector switch and is the switch inside the motor? Should I be replacing the motor or could it be some wiring/fuse/relay issue?

The switch is part of the motor IIRC. So you'd have to replace the unit.

As far as relays and fuses go, the relays drive both headlamps, so if it were a bad relay, both would stop going down.
