I have upgraded to a aftermarket HID 9006 system with external ballasts and external igniters. The "headlamp failure" message comes up. I was wondering if anyone knows how to trick the ecu to think the HID is not blown out. I have been told that HID's draw less power so then the ecu thinks the headlamps are blow!

Help please!

Just out of curiosity, where did you get your Xenon upgrades? I'm planning on doing this myself at some point and would love to hear how your install went, the results, what you bought, etc.

My guess is that you'll need to get the resistance up to the point that it would be with the OEM lights. Probably the easiest way would be to put some sort of variable resistor in and "dial in" to the setting that makes the warning go away - then measure that value with and ohm meter and put a permanant resistor of that value in.

I'd be curious to know if the ballasts draw more current when they first start up than later. If so you may have to put up with the warning at powerup.

Study how the sensor measures the current flow across the shunt ......differential voltage drop. How is the bulb checked when the lights are not on.............a project.

Kind of wasteful to dissipate current in a resistor parallel with the HID.............a 65 watt bulb would be 4.5-5 amps you would need a 30 watt or larger resistor and it would get hot hot so a 100 watt might be necessary to absorb the excess and not act like a mini heater and melt surrounding things.

I know the test for the tail lamp sensor is checking for 12v (or battery voltage) at certain pins on the sensor. I assume the headlamp sensor is similar - could you defeat the whole system by putting battery voltage at this point?
