Hi,

Im headed to the dyno tomorrow and have gone through the last minute checks (boost, compression, et). Was wondering if anyone had some experiences/tips/tricks they could share specific to tuning the RB motors.

I have:
RB25 neo
Holset HE351cw (similiar to the gt30/gt35)
50lb injectors
38mm Tial MVS (15.5 psi springs)
Profec b spec 2 (shooting for around 18 psi depending on numbers)
NGK coppers heat range 7
Z32 maf

Tuning with Nistune and LC-1 wideband
Knock light w/bosch sensor

I planned on dialing in my A/Rs, and then moving to the timing, but am worried about messing with it too much since Ive heard the NEO head likes to knock secondary to the quench pad/high compression it comes with. Is there a general concensus on how much timing these motors like ? Would love to be around the 400 whp range.

Thanks!

Gap your plugs tighter.

Start small. Pull back your ignition timing a few degrees and work on getting your AFR correct. Since you're MAF, this shouldn't take long. Once you reach your target AFR, begin to slowly walk in the timing. 0.3 to 0.5 degree increments are where you want to start with. If you're far from where the timing should be, you should see (relatively) large power gains. Once you stop seeing power gains (it will very quickly diminish), stop adding timing (or even pull back 0.3 degrees for safety). Do all this starting on spring pressure if you're using a boost controller. Once you're happy with the AFR and timing, you can up the boost. If more boost does not give you more power(or very little), stop adding boost.

Assuming the motor is healthy (no damage to the chamber, no hot spots, etc), there is no reason for it to knock. You'll hit MBT (minimum best timing) before the engine knocks. Regardless of this, if your ECU shows knock readings, keep an eye on it to be safe. If you have a set of knock ears, use them. Don't be afraid to periodically check the spark plugs for signs of detonation if you're worried.

Check plugs!! Watch timing and Torque, Its still possible for an engine to detonate prior to MBT, it doesnt generally happen but it can.. so keep an eye on plugs after big power pulls, its nice to have a spare set of new plugs to install and tune with, much easier to see whats going on with new plugs.
