Just got my cometic head gasket in and im about to put on just want to hear some opinions.

Rb20det comes with a metal head gasket oem?At least i think it is anyways aluminum to iron blocks normally use between a 20-60 ra finish rating. Something like that and cometic MLS states "requires a 50 ra finish DRY. Im just trying to figure out why resurface is (required).

When removing gasket material spray and razor blade the only safe" way even on aluminum. Yes, ive heard of the rolac disks but that cant be the only other option because they have bad rep. too.

Opinions guys its goin on tomarrow reguardless not overthinking it just want some input or experiences.

No, the stock HG is not metal. It may have some metal rings in it.Can't really remember, been a long time.

But YES, you need to resurface the block and head if your gonna use a MLS HG.

The Head and Block need a flat surface to seal correctly.

Changing a HG you should check the flatness/True of the surface even if your using a stock HG.

I wouldn't want to do a HG job twice, so I would just resurface it.

Not to burst your bubble or anything, but, I havent heard too many good things about Cometic gaskets. I have one on right now and I just started to burn coolant. They are a b**** to seal.

I'm pulling the head off now to redo and I'm using the OEM head gasket to replace it with.

When I build my spare block this winter I'll be using Cosworth.

Did you have the head and block resurfaced before you installed it? I'm just asking because I've heard the same thing hear on the internet but, I know a lot of high horse power domestic guys in my area have zero issues.

I am not a fan of cometic gaskets either, I have had a few leak on me.

For prepping the surface, i'll use a razor blade to get most of the gasket off. Then I use a wire wheel(thin wire) to finish the surface. Roloc disks are much more abrasive than wire wheels. You'll notice this trying to clean sealant off the oil pan. A roloc disk on the oil pan will cut through the paint and into the metal. The wire wheel will cut the sealant and barely go through the paint.

This thread and the head bolt torque thread make me think we could use a teardown/rebuild faq/wiki.Not to replace the FSM, but more to augment it.

Unless this stuff is already in one of the faqs above and I've just forgotten.
