Headgasket question

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

Hey all,

My g/f got a 94 sentra with a 1.6 ltr engine really cheap from a friend. Its got 208k miles and actually ran very well. The previous owner took really really good care of it.

The car ran great until a few days ago. Performance seemed to be cut in half, and it lost all of its guts. So i gave it a tune up, plugs/wires/cap/rotor and changed the oil. None of this helped. I then noticed oil in the antifreeze. The antifreeze is fresh, had it flushed right after buying the car, that was around xmas time. Im kinda stumped. There wasn't any water in the oil when i changed it. Usally its the other way around.

Im not very familiar with Nissans. So im asking is there an area where the water is getting through other then the head gasket? This just doesnt make sense. Poor performance and oil in the water!

Also how diffacult do u rate changing out the head gasket on a scale 1-5? i can wrench, have a 22re that ive over hauled and it wasnt to diffacult.

i appreciate any input.

Sounds like a headgasket to me. I'd say you're up for it as well based on that 22re bit.

Im in luck:) its not the head gasket.

I dumped the antifreeze and i dont have any oil in there, woot. It looked like oil in the tester when i tested it but after draining it, i found that its just filthy nasty. This really upsets me cause i paid a local shop 75 bucks to do a system flush. So, there going to hear from me and im going to get my money back

So now im trying to figure out where the power went. So i started at the timing chain. Its been really loud since we got the car but i read they are normally loud so i didnt worry about . What i found was a seized tensioner that was about ground to nothing and a very stretched timing chain.

The price to replace these items was a a whooping 150$. Yea i got them from the dealer. I dont know of any good aftermarket retailers for nissans yet nor what parts work well and which ones dont.

I hope this works.

I do have a question. I tried to self diagnose the problem via the ecu. I read that they have led's that blink when switched in to diagnose mode to get codes. The ECU in this car had the diagnose mode but no led's anywhere. The check engine light hasnt come on nor did when i switched the ecu in to diagnose mode. Is this normal? Any other way to get the codes other then getting a ODB1 code reader?
