head unit shuts off

hello,i just installed a jensen head unit in my 91' 240 but once i was almost done. the unit shut off by it self. so i turned it back on then it stays on for a few seconds then go's of again....the fuse in the head unit is fine but i cant figure out why it keeps shutting off... thanks 4 your help..

Check the ground. Don't ground it in the OEM harness, give it a good chassis ground. The OEM harness doesn't always have a ground but the aftermarket OEM adapters will have a black wire wire intended to be used as a ground.

I've also seen people wire up the ground to the parking light wire because if they are testing it for power or ground it will show up as a ground unless the intaller turns on the parking lights. Is it shutting off when you turn on the lights?

Some Nissan harnesses do not have a ground wire on them. The radio gets ground through the antenna which is not that great. Plus, you could have a speaker wire shorted/grounded out. You may need a volt/ohm meter to find the problem.

great!! found the problem...yea @ first i couldnt even get it to power up ...but then i serched and found out about the grounding and how you have to ground it to the base...than after i finally got power it kept shutting off ...after that i found out i shorted a speaker wire and the radio fuse was out under the dash. thanks for all you guyses help...problem solved

They get their ground from the chassis when they are bolted in. If it's using only the antenna for ground you will have problems. That's probably the only place his radio was getting a ground from which is one of the reasons his radio was cutting out. Of course the shorted speaker wires will to the same thing! You've got to make sure those speaker wires are in good shape.
