In tearing down my head on the engine to be built, I found this!

Can this be fixed at the machine shop or is this head now trashed? I have another I can use, but would rather not because the cam bearing surface was scratched on it...and it'll need some fixing as well...blah blah blah.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

i think it is still usable. Looks like the it was taken off there for better access to the head bolts.... but thats pretty ****ty spot to do that.... have your machine shop look at and see what they think about it.

welding alluminum is pretty tough... your best bet is to take the 2 heads to the machine shop and see which one they like better.

There's nothing protruding into the bearing surface area, so I think I'll just bolt it up and roll with it.

I'll be ridin' durty.

I have to agree.... Thats actually not the extreme wear side either.. the main thrust is on the cam cap side... If none of the metal has distored into the bore of the cam journal, and the cam doesnt hit anywhere else... put it back together...

Thanks for the support, Ivan. Think it might be a good idea to maybe hit the edges of the broken area with a file VERY lightly to ensure no more flaking off?

Haha, but i thought it was "derrty"I vote for using the spare. You don't know what happened, or what the problem was/is. You are playing with fire, man, and RPM are the gas. Also, don't forget to have the cam checked out thoroughly if you will be using it.

The cam is fine. I've inspected it thoroughly. I feel pretty good about using this cam/head combo. Contrary to some suggestions, I'm still going to use the 248/248 combo. Some have been suggesting that a 248/240 (stock) combo is better, but I think I'll try the 248/248.
