I'm pretty sure I'm going to remove my head to change the head gasket and install cams, etc. Rather than have a shop do it.

I just had a few questions:

When removing the head, do you have to remove the cams and stuff or can you just remove the timing chain, bolts, and pull the head off?

I'm planning on having a shop install comp valve springs and cams and flatten the head.

Can I just pull the head off and take it to someone or is it nessesary to strip it down a bit to even remove it?

Hey dude. I just got done with a friends redtop. You have to pull the cam caps, cams, timing chain tentioner, cas. We pulled the intake manifold and turbo before we started to make it a bit lighter. He was also going with a bigger turbo/different manifold setup so that had to go anyway.

This was my first head gasket job on a SR (done several on GSR motors and such) and it took me a while. I would say I am VERY familiar with my car just haven't done that much stuff with the motor (other than put it in and wire it up and stuff). Good luck

Make sure you use the correct proceedure for removing the head or you can warp it.

Pretty much the only things you leave in the head when you are taking it off are the valves, springs and hydrolic lash adjusters (if you want to). They will all be taken out if the head is going to be serviced anyways.
