just a quick question concerning the head on my ka. it is turboed. when i first put the engine together and installed the turbo kit. the engine is freshly built. head new valve job. anyway i was doing a few pulls on the engine, taching it around 4000rpms and the cam sproket jumped off the exhaust cam. it completely pulled the line up pin out of the cam. i replaced the cam with a new one and put another timing chain set on the engine. i inspected the pistons, no marks on the pistons from the valves. the pistons are 8.3:1 by the way. the valves don't appear bent. i turned the head upside down and poured alcohol into each of the chambers. the alcohol didn't run out like crazy but after about 3 hours it was slightly damp down the valve stems on all 4 cylinders. so my question is...do you guys think the valves are bent? or is it just some carbon around the valves letting the alcohol seep through? any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You would definitely notice internal damage if your valves had hit the pistons. So, going on what youv said, i would say that no the valves never came in contact with the pistons, and your valves shouldnt be bent.

Iv never heard of that test you did with the alchy, and am not sure how to interpret the results. It could just be some carbon deposits like you said, however im not sure.

I agree with 480sx, you would notice valve-piston contact pretty easy.If it took 3 hours to get a little damp, then I would say your valves are not bent.Anything mass produced won't be exactly perfect anyway. By the time everything heats up and expands, there won't be any way anything can leak.Good luck, hope everything is cool with your engine.

Sorry for the late response. I had a similar issue awhile back, different motor and car all together. One thing you'll want to do is spin the cam by itself and watch the valves actuate. With the cam bearing caps on and torqued it should still be fairly easy to turn. If it's not, you may have an issue. Watch when the valves extend into the combustion chamber. Compare the angles of all of them.

I still doubt you had contact since there is no visible damage, but I'd rather check everything then have to pull it all apart again.

Hence the word in his post "shouldn't" It's not hard to remove them if your head is already off. Pull them out and see if oyu see any variations form one to another. Mark them so they go back in the same one

And if you do pull your valves out.... see if the 'drill method' works for you.Put the stem tip in a cordless drill, or one with variable speed. Then turn it slowly with the drill. That's how I check valves. Even if it's not in 100% straight, you can still tell a bit if it's bent.
