I'm finished rebuilding my sr20det motor. Now onto the head, i've got my head backed on and torqued. Problem is that i mixed up all my rockerarms, hydraulic lifters, & shims. I know i knwo i shouldnt have done this, but this is my first time. I know the hydraulic lifters seem to be all the same size, question is about the rocker arms. Under each rocker arm there is a number. Does this number have anything to do with the relationship to where they are seated? I know i hafta measure the shims. I have a feeler gauge at home, does anybody know the precise steps in order to measure out the clearances. In conclusion what i really need to know is about the shims and rocker arms. Please i need help asap!!

You are correct that the lifters are all the same. I have my head disassembled right now too, all my rockers are numbered but i have them labeled, and all the shims labeled too. I doubt you are lucky enough that our numbers would match up, but I can give you the number and location it goes in my head if you like.

Hydraulic lifters doesn't matter where they go as long as the are still within spec. Rocker arms shouldn't matter unless your cam lobes have worn certain rockers which I doubt matter. Matching up shims and guides to the proper valves are the tough part.

A feeler gauge isn't going to do anything for measuring out shims. The easiest way to measure shims IMO is to build a bracket that can bolt to the head and have a micrometer bolted to it. Then you need to measure the height to the lower part of the guide while on the valve, then measure to the top of the valve where the shims would go and find the difference. This whole time the measuring tool has to be and the exact same height. Kind of hard process to explain, you'd be better off looking at the process in the FSM than trying to understand my rambling

Ok you say that the rocker arms and lifters are all the same size. I thought the rocker arm guides are all the same size as well just that the shims are different sizes. Can you correct me on this? A bracket, hrmmm that seems like alot of work but i know where you are going with that. ANyone else with helpful hints as to this problem?

Ya the guides should all be the same size.

The only other way I can see doing it without building a bracket is to mount a straightedge across the head, the top where the cam brackets go would seem like a good spot and mount a micrometer onto it from there. This way probably wouldn't be as accurate though.
