hi guys, i have a 92 se model, and the ka24de has about 90k miles on it.

well i was driving down the highway, about 3500 or so and i heard a loud POP bang bang bang. it sounded so lound that i thought that something was hitting one of my pulleys or something. well i pull over to a stop and shut it off to take a look, open the hood, start it up again, and cylnder 2 sh*t the spark plug and wire right out. i took a look at the plug, and the last two threads had been trashed and the diode was smashed in or broken off. luckly i had some old plugs on my floorboard, and i grabbed one to put in so i could get home. well, the head's threads were chewed up and i sat there for about 10 minutes trying to get it in with out double threading it. i gave up and cranked the SOB in there. after the first three turns it got easier (but not as easy as it should have been if it wasnt double threading) and i tightended it all the way down. well now that ive got it home, what should i do? the motor feels ok when i am driving normal, but when i get on it, it feels like its running on 3 cylinders and missing a whole bunch. is there any thing i can do to restore it to working order apart from buying a new head?any help is appreciated, and im sorry for the long post.

i was thinking about that, thats what my friend did when this happened to his civic, but he said he lost tons of power and it was never the same (not that civics have to much power to lose...) BTW, how did you re tap the heads with out getting metal shavings in the motor? if i have to take the head off, then i might as well go get a good one from the junkyard and do some porting

I had almost the same problem...was doing a compression test on the no.1 cylinder when the tester got double threaded on the way out. ended up stripping all the threads out of the cylinder head. If you have a Helicoil kit you can just rethread the cylinder head....or if you dont want to risk doing it your self you can take it to most shops and paying about $60 for them to do it. I havent noticed any loss of power since, but you dont want to go about and constantly remove and replace the spark plug risking tearing out the new threads

We used a magnet,The long skinny one with the extension used to pick up bolts and things when you drop them in the engine bay.And the air compressor, just shoot air in the spark plug hole,It got out all the small metal peices.

You can get better inserts than a helicoil for this, they are a full threaded copper or brass insert. When tapping out/tapping for helicoil/or drilling for one of these inserts im talking about, one method to keep chips out of the cylinder is putting grease on your bit. Another possible option is feeding compressed air into that chamber with the intake valve open, while you tap it. Go with the first option, you wont do much harm considering chips from the cross thread have most likely already fallen in. Try tapping it out with the same size tap first with it greased up, unless you can definately see the threads have been crossed all the way down.

What i would do if i were you, is go to your local engine machine shop and ask their advice. Bring your car if possible, they may be able to fix it right there if they arent to busy. They will have the inserts youll need anyways.
