set the engine to tdc. pay attention to the little bolts that bolt to the head and upper timing cover, because if you forget they are there and try to get the head off you'll bend them. pull the valve cover and front timing cover, unbolt the cam gears, mark the chain links that line up with the dots. take off the cam towers, marking their positions. Lift the cams out after marking them clearly intake and exhaust. take off the exhaust manifold and maybe ziptie it up to keep the weight off the exhaust. unbolt the tb and lower intake manifold, its not going to go anywhere cause its bolted to the block with a bracket. Take care not to knock off the shims that the cams sit on because they are all matched to a specific clearance. You will need an allen head/hex type socket for the head bolts. Then you should be able to pretty much lift the head off. There are some little spacers that go into the block/head that act as dowl pins, but the bolts pass through them. Take note of them and don't lose them. There are also some solenoids and stuff that mount to the back of the head (egr and swirl control valve equipment) that you can remove or loosen or whatever. You should also use new headbolts when you put it back in. They are around 55 dollars from courtesy nissan. Don't toss your old ones though, you will need the washers from them! The washers are tapered, make sure you put them in with the wider side on the bottom and the tapered side on top. There is a specific procedure to go through when tightening the new bolts. Something like torque bolts to 20, then to 50, then loosen them, then torque to 28, then 68. put the cams in with the first lobes facing away from each other, something like 10 o clock and 2 o clock when you look at the engine from the front. Then match the dots on the cam gears back up with the marks you made earlier on the timing chain links, and put everything back together.
something like that. did I miss anything?
