Overheating problems sidelined my car. I replaced radiator, then water pump, and finally the thermostat. Also the radiator hoses. Seemed ok for a while. Then after recent replacement of motor mounts the car overheated on the way back from the shop. Mechanic said wait til the car burps. So I opened the cap on the radiator (hiss), it burped and I tighten the cap back down. Temperature gage went down to normal range. I drove home no overheating. But it happened again. I am going to remove the thermostat and try running the motor without it to check the flow throught the cooling system. I know it is highly unlikely that a year old water pump may be defective but I want to check it out before thinking there is a problem with the head gasket. I never took this motor apart and if the problem is in fact the head gasket I want to know beforehand what I would have to do. Ugggg!

I doubt you have a problem with your head gasket.

1) How much coolant did you put in? If you "thought" you filled but there was a air bubble and you burped the system, the coolant level would go down and you would over heat.

2) When you burped the system did you top off the coolant?

3) Have you noticed that you are burning any coolant? smoke or smell from exhaust?

When you replaced the whole coolant system, you open yourself up to a TON of air bubbles. I would monitor how much coolant is in there and give "burping" the system one more try.
