After reading quite a bit, I have discovered that these damn things are quite a bit different then the RBseries. Hell you have cam shims for christs sake. I take it you don't have hydraulic lifters either? How about timing, belt or chain?

Would it be to much to ask if any of you would mind posting or sending me some pics. I know I could hunt around online to find them. But with building up a couple RB20's and being on Alert all the damn time I've become quite busy.

Thx in advance guys.

Nevermind about the pics, I was screwing off at work and found some. Of course more info is always welcome. I'm still learning the KA but I'll have this little bastard figured out before long.

the sohc is hydralic, and has a single chain....very simple yet elegant design..in stock form it flows at 208cfm intake and 146cfm exhaust ....with porting this can be vastly improved....its has a light valve train..combustion chamber is OK...no quench areas..though it could be modified....

The KA24DE has hydraulic lifters if that what you want to call them and multi chains. Under the shim is the hydraulic lifter. and spring, retainer and valve.......

Thx...not so different afterall. I wonder why Nissan would go with shims? Poor design in my opinion.

WD you must understand that the KA motor was not a "prised" engine to Nissan. like RB class or the SR class. Im sure the engineers at Nissan are quite amazed at what they here about this engine. Nissan built this motor to be just good enuff to supply US Nissan automobiles. Nissan did not build the KA for high horse power they built it to not break saving money in the long run in warrenty issues. I think its one of the best 4 cyilinder motors to play with. Its strong and BIG and it makes loads of torque! O and its cheap compaired to the other class of Nissan motors.

What hydraulic lifters? If it used hydraulic lifters, you wouldn't need shims.

The KA has direct actuated valves which are lighter and require less spring pressure to keep the valves from floating. But they are not hydraulic. Hydraulic lifters are those that self adjust the valve lash through oil pressure. The SOHC KA has hydraulic lifters. Run a freshly built SOHC KA for the first time and you will get tons of valve noise. About 20 minutes of idle and then the valve noise will go away as the oil makes it's way into the lifters and reduces to the valve lash to acceptable levels.

I actually don't like the SR personally. Mostly because of the competition between Skylines and 180's. I'm also in favor of a more torquey engine. Somthing my RB20 is lacking.

There are a few different types of hyd lifters. I''ve never pulled the head apart so I couldn't say for sure. But it does make sense that you wouldn't need shims with the hyd type without serious machining defects from the factory. The head's are usually line reamed all the same, which is another reason I don't get the shimming requirement. So the cams should always ride on the same plane which means the valve spring to cam distance should always be the same therefore not requiring shims.

Maybe I'm not thinking straight, it's been a long day.
