Okay NICO,

I am in need of a good HD video camera. I have no idea what to look for in one these days. The last time I did any research was when my family bought one back in 2001.

I am going to use it for a movie project for one of my classes, but that is not particularly important. It does need to be decent in semi-low lighting situations for this though.

I would like it to be full HD, and record on a HDD or flash memory (either, or both). Slow motion video would be really classy, as I plan to use it to record AutoX, RallyX, and general automotive mayhem, but is not necessary.

My mother (the one ponying up for the purchase) will use it a lot to record things for her elementary school. Lessons, outings, etc. etc.

Don't want to spend more than $500.

I was looking at the Sony HDR-XR200V, the Canon HF20, Sanyo VPC-FH1A (does 600fps slow-mo, but in a worthless resolution), and the Panasonic HDC-HS250K. I literally just started looking though, so I have no idea.

Anyone who has something along these lines, please chime in. I will accept advice from anyone. Please help!!

Edit: Here's some boobs. Dammit I still think she is hot as hell.

That is an outrageously expensive video camera. The want is strong, but the bank account is thin.

if you going for the Sony get the HDRxr500v, originally listed for 1200, you should be able to get it from a Sony outlet for brand new for 720. i know that's a bit more than you wanted to spend but the optical stabilization is sick for super smooth while shaking the cam and it has a low lux mode that shoots super clear in full color down to a single candle light source.

I have a Canon Vixia HF-100 and absolutely love it. Very light, good anti-shake, records on 16GB SD cards and is perfect for what I wanted to use it for. Only limitations are: microphone is kinda limited, so getting an external mic is a good idea depending on the quality you want - Canon makes one (somewhat big though) that plugs into the hot-shoe spot on the Vixia.

BTW, the HF-100 It has been replaced with newer Canon models - with even better recording quality, since the HF-100 "only" does 1080i (note: 'i' not 'p'), so you can find the HF-100 new in sales for around $500. If you have more funds, then I would choose the later model Canon's, since they have better AVCHD recording capability and will have perceptibly better (albeit minor) recording quality.

I prefer Canon camcorders to other makes because their lenses are so much superior in quality - even the manufacturers that tout "Zeiss" lenses.

Well, Dasoupdude has pointed me towards the Canon Vixia HF200 for $529, so I would go with that.

I think I have narrowed it down to either the Sanyo VPC-HD2000 or the Canon Vixia HF200. It really just depends now on which one my family would prefer, as I will not be the only person using this (though I plan to use it a lot).

Keep it coming guys, you are really helping me out. Thank you everybody who has contributed so far!

That is an excellent price for that video camera, and BH Photo is a reliable place to buy it from. Given my experience with the previous gen HF-100, I'd make this decision over the Sanyo in a heartbeat.

Just be aware that the "accessory shoe" contacts is a Canon specific design - third-party stuff should not be put into it.

Its also apparently Canon's smallest and lightest HD video camera, so there is THAT.

/Those Go pros are awesome, it makes riding around in a parking lot feel like your doing the nurburgring. Its funny how self conscious you get while driving while its on.

If you are going to use it in a car a lot, especially rally-x you probably don't want one with a hard drive.

Look for one that records to SD or some other kind of solid state media.

Way to read boss. If you had done that, you would have known that I already bought one. Yes, it does record to SD only. Cheers though!
