I changed my plugs out the other day and told mybrother in law about the ft. pounds the spark plugsrequired per the Haynes book. He said that's ways toomuch. I trust his judjment since he pays out lots of $to race his custom car.

Is this supposed to be inch pounds rather than ft.pounds for the torque up of the plugs? It says ft. pounds in thebook.

Looks like the FSM says 14-22 ft. lbs. What does Haynes say?

Being that our cars use a spark plug with a gasket seat, I'd say that's why the number is high to your brother in law. I'm not sure what type he's used to using but with the gasket type I believe they do crush a little bit to seal which would require a bit of torque. That's my take on it.

Thanks,

I torqued the plugs on my 95 but NOT on my 98

Both are ok. I just hate torquing up something I cant see!

My general rule of thumb is torque it till it breaks... back off 1/4 turn.

Note... DO NOT do that.

I'd just go ahead and follow what the FSM says. Also make sure the threads are clean, otherwise you can torque it to the specified rating but it won't seal. A little lubrication on the threads probably wouldn't hurt either.

ROFL Yeah, that's especially fun with aluminum heads.

I put anti-sieze on the plugs before seating and get themstarted with a water hose in the threads

I would cry if the plug broke. I wouldnt have thefirst clue how to get that broken plug out.
