Actually, if my anthropology serves me correct, the Hawa'ii are of Polynesian origin. They are not directly related to the Japanese group of tribes. Modern Japanese originally emigrated from the northern Chinese mainland, Hawa'ii from the southeastern Asian archipelago (sic?).

The reason there's so many Japanese there is due to immigration laws back in the early 1900's, when the US would actually differentiate between different racial groups as a limit to who could immigrate and who could not. The first wave of immigrants were Chinese, then came the Japanese. They came to Hawaii because at the time the sugar cane plantations were in need of cheap labor. Japanese-Americans have a rich history in Hawaii and deep roots that were torn during the internment camp period due to the Pearl Harbor incident. Many Japanese-Americans lost their homes because of this, and one could imagine how it feels to lose all your possessions and get stuck in some cruddy place in the Mid West just because you were Japanese. Japanese-Americans did not side with the Japanese, and this is why you see so many of them there looking at the historical sites.

Excellent post! I'll add that the most decorated American unit of WWII was the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, initially formed from Japanese-American servicemen. They recieved over 18,000 combat awards, including 9500 Purple Hearts, 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, Seven Distinguished Unit Citations, and one Congressional Medal of Honor.

Incident? It was a hell lot more than an incident. If they had succeeded we would be speaking Jap. Do you know what they did to the Chinese people they conquered? It seems the history books have become too PC. I dont hold anything against the present folks. They have become excellent business people, as well as wonderful people to know, but let the truth be told of what really happened. They are a lot better off now then if they had succeeded. Democracy and free trade will promote the human condition, competition, and that is all we did when we freed them from a corrupt government.

Does anyone else know why argueing on the internet is like runing in the special olympics?

Maui has a tall mountain that's way cool. The peak is usually above the clouds...14,000 feet I think, or maybe even 16,000. But for overall scenery Kauai is the nicest IMO, unless you want to see an active Volcano, then you need to go to the island of Hawaii. Oahu is where the people (and the nightlife) are at.

You say it like there's something bad about that.

As much pain and suffering as they caused all around the world at the time, who cares. Shoulda done Tokyo to even the score even more. If they had been able to nuke Berlin, would that have been a bad thing at the time?

Screw the revisionist.

Uhhhh....nope, they're polynesian. The japanese are immigrants there, just like we are.

Well, we're actually invaders. Little difference there.
