Hi guys I ready the FSM for the s14. I have a s13 redtop I need to check my timing chain. I replaced the head gasket and unfortunately the timing chain appears to be off a tooth or more haha. I couldn't get it to line back up. So my question is I have the oil pan and baffle off as well as all the bolts for the timing cover. Do I have to pull the head back off to remove the timing cover? The FSM mentions removing the head. I wasn't sure I if I can avoid this. I'm having a hard time removing the timing cover and wasn't sure if it was the pressure from the head? Thanks for your time.

Wait a minute, wait a minute, are you trying to line up the bright links in the chain? That **** doesn't matter. The only thing you need to pay attention to is the the timing mark on the crank pulley, and the marks on the cam gears.

The black links are just there for reference. I would try to match it up with those links those because you never know if someone else might need them not knowing you just placed the timing chain back without aligning the links.

Well we tried setting everything correctly but when we turned over the crank it kept hitting. I am mainly interested to know if I have to remove the head to pull the timing cover off. I already dropped the oil pan and baffle. The timing cover just doesn't seem to want to come off. thanks.

No you don't have to remove the head to get the cover off..you have to remove the upper and lower oilpan(s).

remove all the bolts on the upper oilpan and you can wedge it enough open to get enough clearance to pull the cover off..keep in mind theres 2 bolts that go from the head to the cover too.

Thanks for the information. So do I need to do anything to gain access to the second oil pan. The crossmember is in the way? Thanks again.

with the right tools you can get all the 12mm bolts. its kinda a pain in the *** but if you really want to get that chain out then go for it
