To make a long story short...there was some bent linkage from the previous owner on one of the trunk "arms". I straightened it out and am now trying to reinstall the torsion bars.

The concept seems pretty straight forward and they seem to be in the right position/spot but I can't seem to get the proper leverage to put the pre-load on the bar and then connect the lifting arm. Is there a trick to this that I am missing?

very frustrating...

nevermind. I was trying to put the wrong side on first. It was much easier the other way, although still a hell of a job. Oh well, its over-with now.

a step by step hmmm. Its one of those things that is really hard to explain with words only. I KNEW I should have taken some pictures while I was in there because I thought someone might have had the same problem.

First of all, I think the best way to do it is to remove the trunk lid from the arms so you dont have that force working against you. Also getting INSIDE of the trunk makes accessing it less frustrating. Then you can do each torsion bar at a time (obviously).

Without getting too specific and confusing I'll try to explain the process I went through with 3 steps.

Each torsion bar pivots in these little brackets on each end. They are like little hooks to hold the bar up. -I "hung" the first bar (order doesnt matter) from the hooks on the ceiling of the trunk at the end of the torsion bar (where the bends in the bar create a loop). -The trunk connecting arm has its own little hook which you connect to the center of this square shape "loop" in the bar and then you can pivot the bar with your hand and watch the trunk arm move up and down (and get an idea of how the bar works).- This is the tricky part. Now you move to the other end of the torsion bar which mounts in 2 different locations 1)a pivoting notched bracket in the roof and 2) a rigid hook-like piece I cant really describe. There is a closed loop on the very end of the torsion bar which you are trying to loop around this hook. The trick is that in order to do this you must twist the bar to get the proper angle on it to loop it around this hook. It takes a good amount of strength, but I'm no hulk and I did it.

Of course then you can repeat this on the other side. Its actually fairly straight forward when you are in there looking at the whole scenario...you can't really put it in wrong if you do it in this order (starting by connecting the trunk arm first).

Some pictures would probably make this much more comprehend-able?...but just getting in there and trying to attempt it is actually the best way. I know reading stuff like this gets overwhelming.

let me know if you need any clarification.
